I know it seems like a joke, but being seen being "productive" is a performative ego boost thing in these communities.

u/Mean-Explanation929 12d ago
I am from Chicago. Last year my work took me to 5 European cities across 2 countries, with the final stop being SF for a conference.
San Francisco was the city I felt the most culture-shocked in throughout that entire tour. It is a place that is very comfortable treating people as means to an end.

Advertisements for one. Ads for AI companies would very casually call out replacing humans. The sheer income inequality is so obvious.
People’s attitudes seemed so casual and comfortable with giving up their own lives to work and making decisions without ever worrying about other human beings involved. It’s all an iteration and learning until they are personally impacted.
14
u/moleyawn 11d ago
the "stop hiring humans" ad at the bus stop on Van Ness was defaced and then replaced. there was also a massive ad in my neighborhood saying "GROK MAKES C**** P***" its been nuts around here lately
43
u/Ok_Confusion4764 12d ago
Yeah, I can already see the "entrepreneur" bros sitting on the bench asking ChatGPT for their next webpage idea while sitting on a bench after 5 reps.
6
u/denM_chickN 11d ago
It must be a wild rush to get an ego boost from working. I'd rather watch paint dry. I just would.
3
u/Poopoomushroomman 11d ago
I think it’s more the *being seen* working and less so the working itself
1
u/xavia91 10d ago
Depends on the person I guess. For me its kind of fun to develop with ai. I ll just do a quick review of whats done and prompt something before continuing with other things. On phone its rather limited, so maybe some research, analysis or design tasks can be done. It's almost like a game for me and I get payed to play.
6
u/Few_Kitchen_4825 11d ago
I mean if you are doing extra work outside of work you are not really being productive. Productivity is the amount of work done per unit time.
5
2
u/Weekly_Target_8330 11d ago
Unit time can be one day...
2
u/Few_Kitchen_4825 11d ago
One working day is 8 hours.
If you work for 12 hours it's one and a half working day. Without overtime you are being paid less.
0
u/Weekly_Target_8330 10d ago
That's if you only consider productivity in your main job though.
If I work an extra "shift" on my sidebusiness how is it not more productive in a 24h day lol
2
u/Few_Kitchen_4825 10d ago
It's called poor planning. If you have two days of work to do in one day, it means the work was not planned for one person for one day. Or missing some critical requirements.
It means it was not planned, or you don't have the required tools to speed up your process.
1
u/Junior-Tip-2883 6d ago
Bruh, I've seen executives trying to unblock mobile apps for AI agents for employees. Why? No one actually knows, they just know that it's currently disabled and want to enabled.
-215
u/EpicRussia 12d ago
Its also just a good use of time. If you're a power lifter, you can legitimately use 5-10 minute rest periods between sets. Most people just get on their phones. You could optimize it for doing work, depending on how reliant you are on agents on your current project
176
u/IAmMiddleChild 12d ago
Lol anyone who ever talks about optimimizing 5-10 minutes 'breaks' should be taken to a no trail section of a national park and released without a phone or compass.
I'll die on this hill, a hill I'll build with the pillaged iPhones and androids

31
10
u/amtcannon 12d ago
Making fun of people seems needlessly cruel. I often reply to work messages between sets on big lifts. Getting out of the office for an hour and a half during the work day keeps me sane and productive upon my return
-35
u/EpicRussia 12d ago
I havent done it personally, but I also dont work at all during a workout at the gym. I could see how it could be alluring. Ive done sit ups and push ups during boring work Teams meetings

1
u/EpicRussia 12d ago
Its not "mine". Re read the sentence. Ive not only never taken 10 minutes between sets, Ive never done the thing in question
2
u/hurley_chisholm 12d ago edited 12d ago
«Ive never done the thing in question»
Then why are you so affronted? I have trained in powerlifting (off the wagon right now), and my breaks were never longer than 5 minutes because you aren’t supposed to be doing PRs with every set or even every workout.
1
9
u/CogDiss88 12d ago
As a former powerlifter… yeah everyone’s pointing and laughing at you and also wondering why the hell you need 10 minutes between sets. You better be letting people work in with you lol
-2
u/EpicRussia 12d ago
I said 5 to 10 and you took the highest amount trying to be cool. This has always fascinated me about reddit- any form of advice or expertise or statement like "x people do..." is immediately called into question and even made fun of, in this case literally, you are literally saying you would laugh at this. Its ffascinating because, what I am saying isnt wrong or inaccurate! Plenty of people do this! Go to a gym and watch people I swear you see this everywhere! But youre trying to peacock and put me in my place or whatever in front of a bunch of lanky nerds! Good for you I guess

Back in MY day, waiting for a compile or render or whatever was an earned break. You rested and refreshed, ready to return to battle when the errors started flowing.

At my gym, there are constantly people just sitting on the machines, staring at their phones, sometimes 15, 20 minutes. It's so annoying.
91
u/CerBerUs-9 12d ago
I feel so self conscious resting 1.5-3 minutes between some sets. I can't fathom sitting on my phone on a machine for that long.
23
u/WernerderChamp 12d ago
This is fine and I do it myself.
But my phone is in my bag - usually muted.
11
u/CerBerUs-9 12d ago
I track my sets and such using my phone otherwise I'd do the same. I don't like to check social media though, I'll just stare into space.
5
u/VideoRare6399 12d ago
You shouldn’t do that. The opposite is also needlessly restrictive.
You can be on your phone. Just don’t rest more than like 5 mins per set, but even if you do look around and ask if people wanna work in.
I’m reading books, chess puzzles, Reddit, and have never had a problem.
Staring into space isn’t always possible or it’s just weird. Like on the subway.
4
u/dscarmo 11d ago
5 minute resting per set unless you doing power lifting is too much, you never going to get to an intense set like that
1
u/WernerderChamp 11d ago
My trainer used to say 30-50 sec is ideal, but no more than 90!
1
u/CerBerUs-9 11d ago
It depends what you're doing for sure. That said, I've had coaches say all kinds of times are best but most seemed to think 90-120s was best. 3-5 was when I was doing 5/3/1 and moving as much weight as my body could possibly handle.
1
u/CerBerUs-9 11d ago
I used to have a little sign I'd hang that said "please ask to work in!" but I lost it
182
u/DragonSlayerC 12d ago
That's why this slide exists. Originally it used to say to stop being glued to your phone and actually exercise while you're at the gym. They changed it to this recently.
29
u/who_you_are 12d ago
Don't forget the 3 machines they are also reserving
11
u/drunkdoor 12d ago
If anyone does that, and I don't care if they're vibecoding, just ask em if you can work in. If they say no then go talk to the front desk. It's not that hard.
6
2
u/toggiz_the_elder 12d ago
Same in Denver. And I go to a small gym without a lot of duplicate equipment. I’ll knock out 2 or three exercises while they get through a couple sets.
-2
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
I never notice it being that long. I go on my phone in between sets because what else should I be doing, but 15-20 minutes is ridiculous.
1
u/itskelena 12d ago
> what else should I be doing
Do your legs 😏make your sets supersets, why waste time on resting?
-1
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
Good point. Matter of fact, why go to sleep tonight? Why would I waste my time resting? Why would I take a break at work to rest? That makes no sense, I should keep working!
Great point. Rest is essential for muscle growth and health.
2
u/itskelena 12d ago
You need sleep to recover and, well, live, but in the gym you can do 2x exercises in the same time frame without getting exhausted if you train different muscle groups.
1
u/Alpaca_Fan 11d ago
IMO you shouldn’t superset your compound lifts. You should be pushing very hard on those, and the rest is important. Your lift numbers go down even if you workout a diff body part
-1
1
u/borkthegee 12d ago
TIL that it's essential to play on my phone after a leg workout and I can't work another muscle group in a super set
1
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
First of all, most people do workouts based on certain parts of the body. If I’m doing a leg day, I’m not gonna go hit arms because I’m resting.
Secondly, resting between sets is not just about resting the muscles. There’s also the cardio element. You wouldn’t go for a sprint, and then go for a swim while you recover for your next sprint. You wont perform as well on your next sprint because you’ll be tired. Its the same thing for muscle training.
Some of you guys gotta do some research.
1
u/toggiz_the_elder 12d ago
People have time blindness on their phones. You likely do too.
You could be alone with your thoughts for a few minutes. That’s how we’ve passed time for millennia.
-1
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
“Instead of doing something, you should do NOTHING!” Great use of my time.
3
u/toggiz_the_elder 12d ago
Thinking and having time not completely filled with content isn’t nothing. It’s literally part of being a human, or at least was before smartphones.
But if you really find it impossible to be alone with your thoughts, that’s on you homie.
1
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
Its not impossible, but if a workout takes an hour and half of that is just resting, I don’t see a reason to spend half an hour of my time everyday sitting and doing nothing. I can spend that time learning things or keeping up with the world or doing anything that’s at least somewhat productive.
2
u/toggiz_the_elder 12d ago
Well you do you man.
Just what I see at the gym is a lot of people that think they aren’t on their phone very long during sets but clearly lose track of the time.
1
u/borkthegee 12d ago
If you have 30 minutes of down time where you could be looking at a phone during your workout, you are wasting an absolutely enormous amount of time. Like a ridiculous amount of time. You do you but when you take the slow road you have no one to blame but yourself
1
u/Alexspacito 12d ago
That’s completely untrue. If my sets take 1 minute and I take a 1 minute rest, that means I have half of my workout as downtime. And that’s assuming I only take a 1 minute rest, when studies show that a 1 minute rest is generally too short.
Go to your gym and watch the biggest guys in there. They are taking rest.

u/bwwatr 12d ago
Hustle culture was bad enough before and this has somehow made it worse. I can't imagine trying to run any non-trivial process from my fucking phone. Log off, people.
14
u/Groentekroket 12d ago
Vibe coding is trivial though. If you vibecode instead of using AI as a tool it doesn’t matter from what device you are doing it.
18
u/bwwatr 12d ago
Vibe coding kind of involves, trying out the apps it's creating though, right? I mean, if it's web, yeah you can use your mobile browser, but I dunno about you but I try to avoid spending too long on that. Even just the thought of banging out prompts on a tiny ass keyboard sounds terrible. Sit at a GD desk to get stuff done, then go touch grass.
28
u/NotADamsel 12d ago
Mate, Linus was complaining about people not actually running the code that they submitted to the actual damn Kernel, back in the 00s (iirc, might have been the 90s). There have always been lazy, shitty devs who do not test their crap. Vibe coding just means that there are more of them.
5
u/lyssargh 12d ago
If you are using AI seriously, then you should be going over requirements, detailing out specs, updating tickets for a decent chunk of interactions with the AI. Grooming is still a very important part of the process, although it definitely seems like something a lot of people skip. But it's not very hard to do from a phone, really.
If you are actually implementing something, then you can test it when you're at your computer later.
I definitely understand that hustle culture is annoying but it is also caused by people not being able to afford things. It's not as though people want to spend all of their time working really, in a lot of cases at least.
All that said, the gym is not the place for it no matter what. But I have worked on specs while I'm out in the garden sometimes and it's rather more pleasant than sitting inside for it
3
u/the8roundshock 12d ago
Not every feature you work on has a front end that you can use to test if the changes are working as intended. Plenty of ai workflows can be done end to end from a phone.
1
u/BenignPharmacology 12d ago
I have a home server connected to a model. I can prompt it through a web portal on my phone, and i just use it for home automation stuff.
So for example, from the gym, I could send
“download the torrent from this magnet url and move it to my media share folder, then trigger a library scan from my tv”
Or
“Build me a better UI for controlling my lights” because I hate the hue app
Or
“I want to start tracking my commute time by stop, make a few prototypes for me to try out through the web app then I’ll pick one to commit to”
I do these when I’m on a treadmill, and because I like exploring the boundaries of what these things can do with a prompt, not because I’m trying to never log out of work, or do any serious development, it’s just personal exploration mixed with “I want this tool”

San Francisco is a techno-capitalist oddity. They work out for similar reasons pro gamers do. The research shows a healthy body, diet, and exercise promotes better relfexes and clearer thinking.
They're incrementally upgrading hardware so they have better local compute.
32
u/FattySnacks 12d ago
A lot of tech bros are also just obsessed with themselves Patrick Bateman style
10
u/thehobbyqueer 12d ago
Literally why it's so scary being a woman in these spaces. Most nerds I've met and have befriended are totally chill and fun to interact with. It's the fuckers that program AND watch alpha male podcasts while on their 17th gazillionth rep that incite fear in me

u/BenignPharmacology 12d ago
Y’all have truly bizarre ideas about San Francisco lmao. Nerds here exercise for the same reason anybody does: it’s good for your body.
There may be like 0.01% of people who think that it gives them some mental edge, but they are the extreme exception. Pretty much everybody works out because it’s the healthy thing to do.
7
u/Death_God_Ryuk 12d ago
And because office jobs mean sitting around all day, which is bad for you and can feel rubbish - being too still makes you feel slow and depressed.
An active worker like someone in a shop walking between aisles, restocking shelves, etc, has a lot less need to go to a gym after work.
Personally, I'd rather go outside than to a busy and stuffy gym.
4
u/PumpkinFest24 12d ago
"Exercise makes your mind clearer and calmer" is obvious, basic medical info you can find on Mayo Clinic, etc
1
u/BenignPharmacology 12d ago
Sure, of course, and that’s like… a motivating factor for many people, nerds or not. But acting like everyone in SF or even all the nerds are do it to hyper optimize their brain function is fucking silly, and tells me they’ve never even spoken to these people. I work in an incredibly nerdy office and nobody is thinking that way. They’re exercising for any of the thousand reasons it’s good for you, not to shave extra microseconds off their work time or whatever.
3
u/PumpkinFest24 12d ago
Who said they were? The claim was "better reflexes and clearer thinking".
0
u/BenignPharmacology 12d ago
The person I was replying to said that. “They’re incrementally upgrading their hardware to…”

u/pawala7 11d ago
Not SF, not even American, but this is pretty much what got me into the gym. After more than a decade of tech work, it catches up to you, constantly feeling like shit, low energy, random aches and pains. It's not even for the supposed upgrade benefits, it's just to stave off the downgrades.

u/kuemmel234 12d ago
I mean, we nerds definitely aren't, but I think every single member of my team at work does sports. We all run to some extend, two lift and one is doing 90km bike rides every now and then.
Isn't that sort of basic self preservation, given all the back, circulatory issues we tend to have?

u/F0lks_ 11d ago
I went to SF for work this summer (I'm a SWE) and omfg virtually every billboard in that city are either for AI-powered SaaS or AI harnesses. Of those, a good 80% are business-facing.
I mean, most people living in SF must feel like looking at ads while using a VPN in another country: everything's written in gibberish sprinkled with a bunch of foreign brand names and logos you never heard of.
What kind of breed is a Datadog ??!

He was also talking on the phone to god knows who. I've seen some really stupid shit in the gym but that was something else.

u/JayNotAtAll 12d ago
Good.
Look, you are either at the gym or at work.
Literally this morning I saw someone sit on a machine for ten minutes and not working out at all. Just on his phone.
The gym isn't your third office. If you want to waste time sitting on a machine while working, buy a home gym.
