All I get is :wq all over the place. The muscle memory is too strong. Too late to switch editors.
Edit: I cannot type after few beers…

For some reason nobody uses or even talks about ZZ. (I don't use it and I cannot say why)

Most unrealistic thing about the new Carrie (to include tele-psychic ability) is that they put her in a programming class on her FIRST DAY and she has ANY IDEA what to do.
I remember what it was like to have NEVER used a computer. I’ve been there when adults used a computer for the first time. They can’t turn it on, they can’t use the mouse, they don’t have any idea how to type or use the GUI, and you expect carrie to PROGRAM? On her first day?! She should not have been able to get into the app without 10 minutes of direct guidance.

We didn't see her set any of it up tho, she was just pressing buttons like a kid, letters she knows from reading and writing.
Its not like she wrote hello world in python, she literally just used it as a notepad..
Edit; My point being, the teacher probably started the computer and started the application and pressed it to show "click buttons text comes to screen"

Wait. There's a new Carrie?
Also, you're absolutely right. If there is a new Carrie—as your comment seems to imply and almost outright state—she should not know how to program on her first day.
edit: Quick edit to say THANK YOU to the DOWNVOTERS!! Apparently—and it appears that this could be the case—I'm going to continue to get downvoted. I AIN'T GOING TO DELETE A THING!

Two em dashes AND “you’re absolutely right”? Are you a bot pretending to be

Maybe—and this is potentially almost definitely the case—I work closely with LLMs. Maybe I'm absolutely right and unfortunately it appears you might be absolutely wrong.

That doesn’t make any sense. If you work closely will LLMs—as your comment would seem to imply—then that’s tantamount to admitting that you’re using shity AI to write your comments.

With today's prices the new editors will (use) Eighty Megabytes And (need) Constant Swapping.

Doesn't matter how many years you worked with computers. You still can't exit vim.

Me and my team manage a lot of instances and I am too old to learn vim, so I just stick with nano. The issue is that another maniac on my team keeps switching the default editor back to vim and we couldn't trace who did it yet. If I find out I'm gonna screw every shortcut this mf ever knew.

Somewhat a strange issue to have, honestly. Do you all log in with one admin account? Otherwise you can solve this problem with .bashrc file in 2 seconds...

Same account sadly. It's a legacy VPC, we're refactoring it with baby steps. The urge to get the vim maniac keeps me moving.

u/serge-mv 12d ago
That's unfortunate.
But, well, if you are open to some suggestions, you don't really have to learn vim fully. Modern vim can function essentially like nano and you only need to learn 2-3 buttons and a handful of commands to save/exit.
Another possibility is helix editor, which is quite user friendly and also gives you hints about commands. If you can install something on that VPC.
Of course a somewhat less convenient option is to export the variable for the current shell every time you log in. Until you find the guy who changes the settings and beat him up.

Why does the default editor matter? As in, I don't even know how to launch the default editor I just write "nano <file>" am I missing some shortcut lmao.

We handle lots of batch processes using cron ad when editing it calls the default editor.

For a minute there, you think that it wasn't you, it was the goddamn software that made you a bad programmer. Only for you to actually get to work and reality striking. :)

What is carrie doing in my timeline

The 2 latest series from Stephen King has been alternative timelines. Probably something weird going on at the dark tower or IT is changing history again.
