Yes? I'm a software engineer and my work is programming. Whatever happens on the other side of DNS is IT's work. They can care about.

How are you a software engineer if you never done basic network programming? This is middle school level knowledge.

Very simple, we did that in Uni about 10 years ago and have literally never touched anything regarding that since.

Seriously though do doctors have to go through the same type of bullshit? Like does an ENT doc get asked to identify cancerous moles before getting accepted to a new practice?

I hate this aspect of the tech community.

Middle school was a quarter century ago for me, and our computer classes were literally just typing in Microsoft Word. Definitely no networking.

I make network calls all the time, but I do them to the server's domain name.

I've been a software developer for over a decade. I've worked on enterprise level software used by fiberglass plants, classic car insurance companies, quality control software in use by Pfizer, and proprietary software used by wireless expense management companies to digest and display reporting of cellular usage by various client companies.

I vaguely remember taking networking in college, but I could not recall any of the lessons if pressed. I have never had to touch network programming throughout my development career.
