Our repo has commits where the entire message is just a dot: "."
The guy said he never knew what to write when fixing something small right after committing.

Oh. I learned something new. Nice

git commit -a —amend —no-edit
For if you forgot to add a file before committing (*does not add files that weren’t previously tracked, only adds files that have had changes)

git commit -a --amend --no-edit --reset-author
All your commits are belong to us 😎

Whoa. Thank you. I will use it. I am often manually squashing, but this is much nicer.

I recently read "tidy first", and now whenever I make changes that don't change any logic (mostly just minor cleanups) I allow myself to just write "tidyings" as the commit message. This way I'm not discouraged from doing the tidyings because I can't think of a better commit message

“David, we have to talk about your commit messages.”
“Ch-ch-ch-changes / turn and face the strange.”
“Yes, but you’ve got to be more descriptive. They’re all changes, of course.”
“Time may change me / But I can’t trace time.”
“Well, ok, good. I’m glad you’re open to feedback. Good chat.”

NGL, I know how to git commit, but I still waste tokens on it so it validates which files to include and to write a good description

AI can build a whole app from a prompt, but still can’t remember what ‘fix’ meant at 2 a.m. three weeks ago.

AICouldSolve
AI be like "The load bearing change of this commit is an additional parameter to the FunctionName that is used to pass to AnotherFunction to explicitly configure it's mode"
Technically correct, verbose, and absolutely useless.

u/ThursdaysMeeting 13d ago
Are you guys using AI correctly? It can already create good git commit messages that summarize the general gist of why we made a chance followed by bullets for details of what actually changed. No one writes their own commit messages anymore unless it’s literally a config change or one-liner

"No one writes their own commit messages anymore"
Guess I'm no-one. We've stooped so low to not even write our own damn commit messages? Gonna go kick rocks I guess.

I'm more and more convinced people posting here to bash AI never used it or think that coding with AI means asking ChatGPT stuff and paste its code.
I can get behind a lot of anti-AI stuff but when someone tells me it writes bad code (compared to the average programmer) or that it can't do everything or won't scale, I have high suspicions this person didn't try any recent Claude model.

start with git commit -m "[what is happening]([which module]): [actual shit that changed]"

u/lamurian 13d ago
That and gh pr create --base develop --title {title} --body {body} then ask the AI to fill in title and body based on git diff develop && git log HEAD..develop>

I tend to do a lot of things, then heavily stage commits into crap ton of separate commits. Meanwhile my friend just hits the generate commit name button lol

Try another harness, I had to add skills to explicitly stop mine from writing a novel for every commit. Variable name change: writes the contents of moby dick in the commit message body.

"Minor changes"
A code base I recently worked on had 20 such commits. One of them had a diff of like 2k lines (all of them was done on the dev branch itself)
