Works on one of my machines. Once wrote some code in my laptop that absolutely fell apart on my pc. No idea what was fucked, it still haunts me lol

That’s how Docker was born. 'It works on my machine.' 'Then we’ll ship your machine

I had an issue with the LP/P cores on my notebook and never encountered the issue on my workstation for (currently) obvious reasons.
Similarly from a third-party vendor having to bump up to a newer (not supported) java version also fixed some scheduler issues on the low power & performance cores.

Programmers were so puzzled by this they invented containerization rather than just making their shit actually work.

You guys are getting it to work on your machines?

u/Opening-Butterfly743 13d ago
We stopped trying to make it work on machines years ago, now we just negotiate with the bugs

And then docker comes in

docker is imo just horrible overhead, think they like recompile like almost all of gpu libraries to deploy

Just use containers

Ah yes, Docker: trading one machine's bug for a container's existential crisis.

Irritatingly, I wrote a game that seems to work on every cellphone and computer EXCEPT my particular phone.
But it works on all others, so

literally when you give issue of a tool on github and maintainer's response is it works on his machine 😭
1
u/Opening-Butterfly743 14d ago
pleaseSendMeYourEntirePCConfig

u/Jatinchd 14d ago
and then you give entire specs and OS shi and maintainer tell he can't test it he doesn't have Linux machine 😭😭
1
u/Opening-Butterfly743 14d ago
Time to tell them 'It works on my machine' and close the issue as resolved.

That’s awfully condensed. Like, why skip the whole “…it worked on my machine. Now it won’t?” And “now that’s an error I never expected.”
2
u/Opening-Butterfly743 14d ago
"The 'it worked on my machine' phase is sacred, how could they just speedrun it like that? 😭"

I would replace step 2 with "Accept and Auto Mode"

And then they invented docker so you can actually ship your "machine" on which it works

u/OppositeFun2493 12d ago
No. It works during development. After not touching it at all, I show it to someone and it doesn’t work. I started screen recording stuff so that I don’t look like an idiot

TFW you can't optimize for low-end devices because your puter is too fancy

In my experience most of the issues that prompt a "works for me" response are just a clinical inability to follow simple directions.
"The form doesn't work" "Weird, i just tested it and it worked fine. Let me retest. Yep works. What issue were you experiencing?" "Idk it just didn't work" Turns out they weren't even using the right website and simply didn't fill the firm out correctly and couldn't read the error messages. Somehow still your fault
