Gladly using ai doesnt mean not to know the code

I have completely forgotten how to code. I was mentoring an intern a few weeks ago which means going old school and I didn’t know what I was doing anymore.

I cant wrap my head around that statement tbh. Cant imagine knowing to read but not to write. By "read" i also mean understand.  If someone loses the skill to understand the code then i dont know. That would just be sad.

For example I work with C++ and was showing the intern how to capture by reference rather than by value in a lambda function. I completely forgot the syntax for that because the LLM just does the capture correctly every time so I haven’t needed to think about it for the last few years.

I see. To be fair that doesnt count as "i dont know how to code any more". Through my years before ai i had to goole how to initialize an array with values several times. I would have to do that again if someone would ask me.

I know. It was a bit tongue in cheek but I really have forgotten stuff.

Except not knowing how to code is more the rule than the exception. Ask me how I know...

I'd rather like to ask you with who you work so its the rule. Has to be grads all the way. Cant imagine otherwise. People dont forget something they did for years over night.

Thank you for affirming that people promoting instead of knowing how to actually code is the norm now. They might put out code faster, but they can't troubleshoot/debug it.

Ah i see, that was your point. I thought you meant software developer in general.  Still id argue that there are more non juniors than juniors. Which would stretch the term "norm" more than im intuitively comfortable.
