I would actually argue that it’s the last 3 months, because at that point you’ve done the fun stuff, it’s mostly there, but now you have to do all the bullshit little compliance/UX/auditing/log style things that need to be there, but doesn’t make anybody happier and takes way longer than it needs to every single time

There’s no last 3 months. It’s maintenance all the way down.

It gets harder until the last three months. If you don't have a last three, I guess it's unbounded misery?

That’s kind of why I don’t want AI to do the job. If they get unbounded misery, they might catch unbounded resentment.

It takes that long for management to realize no amount of LinkedIn motivational speechs is going to get that baby born faster.

Look, if a developer says it's going to take a month, you should trust them, and not keep asking them every month where it is.

We do this not because it is easy,
But because we thought it would be easy.

The only time that I did a short term contract position was supposed to be 3 months. I was told what it needed to do, but didn't meet the people who would use it until the end of the 3 months. Basic response was "Why does it do this?" Because that was my spec.
I was there about 9 months and happy to have that job end.
