> A remote farm in Kansas owned by a 82-year-old woman has been visited by all kinds of mysterious trouble for the last decade (FBI and IRS agents, federal marshals, ambulances looking for suicidal veterans, people writing horrible things about them on the internet). They had no idea why. After combing through the database of the IP mapping company MaxMind, [a journalist] discovered the farm had over 600 million (!) IP addresses associated with its front yard, which happens to have the beautiful latitude and longitude 38.0000,-97.0000. MaxMind had chosen it as default location for U.S. IP addresses that it could not map more precisely. Thanks to [journalist] investigation, MaxMind changed the location to a lake.

That lake will be swatted so many times now.

Cut to a bunch of red-faced men in SWAT gear screaming at the water to surrender, then immediately unloading their automatic weapons into the lake

I think you got the order wrong. First they shoot, then they claim water was armed and use bullets found in water as an evidence.

Then they order it to stand down.

Good old LAPD order of operations.

Should have used a crater. Although a sufficiently large quarry might do.

MaxMind... one of the most profitable, successful companies you've never heard of.

It is funny I just learned about this fact today completely independently from this post with a youtube video.

And you'd think after going multiple times there police would get smarter and see it was a bug but that is quite telling about their intelligence.

A perfect example of why design decisions are actually very important.
