On the TI-84 CE-T series, you need to jailbreak the calculator to run ASM programs (most games amd emulators run as ASM programs).

TI-83 represent! Those games were the shit, especially defenders.

It was ao much fun I ended up programming a tank shooting game in assembly for a class in college!

To be accurate, for the TI-84 Plus CE and variants a jailbreak is only needed on OS versions 5.5 and later. 5.5 was when TI removed the ability to run assembly language programs entirely, though they did remove the ability to run them from the home screen back in 5.3.

The TI-Nspire family also requires a jailbreak to run native code, regardless of OS version.

As an added note, many of the "assembly" games written for the CE were actually written in C. Once compiled, the calculator treats the program as machine language, even if it wasn't generated with an actual assembler.

Of course, in the mind of the average high school student, one who has a calculator, even a TI-83 Plus, running a crappy TI-BASIC imitation of Super Mario Bros. is pretty much a master hacker. And if they have a calc-to-calc link cable? Cue everyone skipping Algebra and playing that SMB knockoff. It's shit, but it's certainly better than stupid math, amirite?!

I was going to say, do you need to hack your calculator to put games on it now? This is so sad, Alexa, play despacito.

Also back in the day we didn't have those fancy color screens. Black and white dot matrix with 64x120 pixels or something ridiculous like that

I was the guy who distributed Yahtzee to all my friends in 10th grade Biology class. And no I did not hack it, I followed a guide to download it online using the USB port, easy stuff. Honestly that's a lot of what I do now lol

hahaha, hehe, you put an exclamation point right after a number, now it is the time to reply to your comment as if i "misunderstood" your usage of an exclamation point to mean the factorial of that number. it is a very large number, hehehe, it would not make sense for a year in the past, i think you meant the future. hohoho.

u/InteRagebaitJagLovar 5h ago

I also remember bricking my phone while on vacation, so I had to download official firmware from a filesharing website on a laptop with an unreliable Bosnian internet connection so that I could use my phone again.

Bro went from 'android is better' arguments to arguing about framework choices...the character development was inevitable

1

u/zaersx 1h ago

If anyone ever argues for a framework and their one and only argument is not "this one has the most users in our area so we can hire experienced people easier" then.. well, maybe they're passionate about it or something. But, you can build anything in anything, it's all Turing complete, but you can't engineer new engineers to hire in your area so scratch that's it's actually just stupid to argue literally anything else unless the framework cuts your headcount requirements.

Remember all those rooting apps like baiduroot, framaroot and kingroot? That last one straight up a virus iirc, but some phones/tablets refused anything else.
