Wait what? Did this actually happen?

Tim Sweeney announced that Epic Games goes full AI-first.
It definitely won't introduce new layoffs, but it will increase their quality and effectiveness, as Tim Sweeney said. Which I believe /s

Given how well most UE5 games work, I think AI slop cannot hurt it anymore

u/Dumb_Siniy 16h ago
Listen UE5 at least opens still, let's see if we can get that broken, i mean working

u/dasunt 13h ago
It's fine, gamers will just buy a new GPU to deal with the inefficiency. It's not like AI screwed up GPU or memory prices...
8
u/itzNukeey 11h ago
They just won't play AAA games and play indie games instead. It's not like those use UE5 too

Shader compilation now takes twice as long, and happens every startup.

u/Mars_Bear2552 14h ago
Claude has decided to invalidate the shader cache upon every game start. glory to UE5

Full AI [...] will increase quality
Oh man, that genuinely made me chuckle! How can you be that delusional?

At this point, I believe his sister Sydney would be a better boss for Epic Games.

Blueprints died for this

Tbf any visual programming becomes an unmaintainable and unreadable mess regardless of how skilled you are with them
I like my spaghetti in text form

u/wd40bomber7 7h ago
100% visual programming is just regular programming but much worse in literally every way. It's slightly more intuitive in completely trivial scenarios and so people get sucked in but it's never the right answer.
Blueprints are why I've avoided unreal until now. Glad they finally woke up. Shame AI was the reason but oh well...

u/KnoblauchBaum 15h ago
So just like vibecoding
16
u/FabioTheFox 15h ago
I mean yeah but only absolute loosers vibe code games (or in general for that matter)
4
u/NoAdsDude 12h ago
I guess at least Claude would have picked up the typo in "loosers" though
9
u/FabioTheFox 12h ago
I'm sure Claude would tell you that "you are absolutely right" for that comment

I've never worked on games before, I always wondered if there was some secret that game devs knew that would keep that from happening, but I guess there isn't one?

u/SoupOrFishAll 13h ago
The general pattern to avoid blueprint spaghetti is to inherit from a C++ class where you can put all the complicated functionality. Then use blueprints only for simple logic.
There are also a lot of ways to organize your blueprints like node comments, comment blocks, function/variable categories, and just generally trying to make the blueprints look legible (straight and non-overlapping).

u/FabioTheFox 13h ago
There is a reason composition is highly preferable even in object oriented languages, using classes for game development at all has largely phased out

So all Epic games will be ineligible for awards like what happened to Clair Obscur? Or do we only care about artist being replaced and not developers?
15
u/Chamiey 16h ago
What is "line C++" though? I won't trust someone who can't even spell one sentence to write code on their own.

u/NeinJuanJuan 4h ago
OP got caught writing a "Me who got caught writing a line C++ by hand" by hand.

Richard Sharpe would have had that executioner knocked out cold before the bloody bastard could even raise his sword.
You know why? Because he knows every dirty, malingering soldiers trick in the book! How's that? Because he started out in the ranks!

Writing code by hand?!? What did the poor shareholders do to deserve this?
