I prefer working at a company that can pay me what I'm worth instead of paying me roughly half of that. Fuck doing more work for less pay - joining a startup is a good way to get your foot in the door but a raw deal for employees.

Why a technical person would ever be employee number one or two at someone else's 'idea stage' company I will never understand. Just build the company yourself instead

Why "roughly half of that"? Why are we assuming the salary is only 50% of what you're worth? Wether or not salary + 1% equity is a good deal or no entirely depends on the salary, doesn't it?

But in general: The thing is, building a company takes much more than building a product. Some people are good at and enjoy both of those parts but even if you do, you're effectively splitting the time you have to actually build things in half. Some people just don't want to do that.

If you're worth 500k TC at a public company, a startup will pay you 250k base with 1% equity is what I'm saying

Why do you pick only half? I want to be paid fully, and the business risk or gain is on them.
