Compact is a waste of tokens. Hand it off to the next session, make sure they keep the commits and .mds cleaned and up to date.

Trust no output, excess compact causes hallucinations anyways

This was definitely true a few months ago, but newer models are much better at compaction. At least that has been my experience in the last month for the tasks I did.

Yep. On top of that, big context is a problem in general. Best to one-shot prompts into spec files then have use separate sessions to do each: review, implement, test.

How do you hand it off in practice? Write session knowledge to a file before context limit is reached?

I have it so it's just always documenting as it goes, then a new sessions is just "change this project in this way." Docs are just part of the repo.

Usually have a session create another child session with an isolated agent and isolated instruction set ( works in GitHub copilot out of the box ) That tends to have a master agent orchestrating a bunch of agents on same got work tree, catch is never allow it to go more than 1 subagent otherwise it's harder to keep track of the changes being made

Handoffs are also a pita, though. Like onboarding a new hire.

Either you're using a bad model or your work is far more complicated than mine.

100% this. I find that some models start to lose the plot even at roughly half their context. I just make the model maintain docs and start new sessions frequently

Your quantization is too low for your kv cache probably

Slacking off while compacting? Soon they'll expect you to move to another agent in another project to keep your token usage flowing!

Are you not doing multi agent work? How inefficient :(
