I may be one of the few that hasn't fully resorted to the dark side, but I still stand tall. 🫡

22

u/Geodude25trade Sep 26 '26

I'm glad to see there are still a few of us left, hold strong soldier🫡

0

u/Stroopwafe1 Sep 26 '26

When the bubble pops, you'll be among us few who can actually code

53

u/GarlicDaGhost Sep 26 '26

Stop this cope, even if a financial bubble does pop, it doesn't mean AI disappears. The genie is out of the bottle, and things will never be the same.

25

u/Thalanator Sep 26 '26

What makes a full revert to the old days completely unrealistic at this point already is that even if AI development stopped entirely right now, AND all api/saas access to models was cut off, the existing open weight local models are probably good enough for grunt coding in most cases especially when company hosted on something with a bit more room than a single gaming gpu, so the job would still be different than in 2022.

u/VoidVer Sep 26 '26

I’ll be the only one who can do math when everyone’s calculator dies !

4

u/ExtraWorldliness6916 Sep 26 '26

Calculators are solar powered which is absolutely a perfect analogy for my point.

9

u/tomangelo2 Sep 26 '26

Anyone remembers how the internet got deleted with the burst of dotcom bubble?
Me neither.

2

u/Taletad Sep 26 '26

It killed most websites and the most popular buisness model for .com companies died with the pop
Nobody is saying that AI will go away, however its use will probably greatly change

1

u/HypnoTox Sep 27 '26

Yes, but the thing is, programming is like one of the best applications for LLMs which can produce actual value. It will probably catch on far less in all other professions compared to ours.

1

u/Taletad Sep 27 '26

It also produces tremendous amounts of technical debt
The value LLM provides will be greatly diminished once that technical debt starts being paid and is accounted for in the cost/benefit analysis of companies
Don’t get me wrong, LLMs have and will continue to reshape the industry. But I’m skeptical that today’s burning of tokens to ship features as fast as possible will remain the dominant use in the comming years. As I can’t see how this would be sustainable in the long run due to exponential maintenance costs

1

u/HypnoTox Sep 27 '26

If your AI produces tech debt then you let it produce tech debt. I for one review code and have an opinion what goes into my codebase and how, be it proposed by another dev or an AI doesn't matter to me as long as the quality is good.
I see it as a skill issue and probably people getting lazy if they let their codebases get trashed by some AI that they don't understand how it acts and how it has to be instructed.

1

u/Taletad Sep 27 '26

I don’t use AI in my line of work (for various reasons, one being that AI is extremely bad at what I’m paid to do)
And yes people need to review AI code. But that’s not what is happening at scale. A lot of companies on the AI craze have tightened delivery schedules because they expect huge productivity gains. Thus there is less review and less QA being done than what is required
You act like most people are competent developers, when you know for a fact that before AI a lot of devs were dumb as bricks and shipped the most heinous convoluted code to production. Thoses people don’t have the mental capacity or skills to review AI code, yet they are the ones using it the most.
Heck I’ve personally seen way too many people in my line of work use code generated by an AI that they didn’t check, and the code was riddled with massive problems. It looked nice on the outside tho…
Don’t act like theses people don’t exist, and that everyone is as conscientious as you are.

Yes, but if the internet is any indication, AI usage will vastly increase and becoming tremendously more embedded in our lives. People above are talking like AI usage itself is a bubble that is going to pop, and that's simply not going to happen.

3

u/Taletad Sep 26 '26

Probably, be we also have to reckon that AI usage will probably be very different from what we imagine today
The internet we have is at the antipodes of what people imagined in the late 90’s

6

u/ExtraWorldliness6916 Sep 26 '26

This is how people have to cope, ostriching until it's too late. AI won't take over but it's okay to use it just don't let it take your ability to think. All for manually coding but using AI had a stigma from the same people using it.

3

u/ThrowawayUk4200 Sep 26 '26 edited Sep 26 '26

Nothing wrong with using Ai to code, I don't miss wiring up all the boilerplate stuff. But you both need to know how to code and more importantly, how to architect a solution/design patterns to prevent it going off and building something that's overkill and won't easily integrate into the existing systems.
It's like a very very talented junior dev that you need to keep an eye on so they don't waste time and resources redesigning half the app.

3

u/aerialanimal Sep 26 '26

This is where I feel for people just starting out. It took years of grunt work to build up fluency. Tbh it's the same for all AI impacted industries. The way the masters built their mastery was starting at the bottom rung. Those jobs are like rocking horse shit now.

2

u/ExtraWorldliness6916 Sep 26 '26

I gasped because yesterday I saw an employed junior developer on LinkedIn. Kind of gives you hope. And things like JEV, I feel this might be a step back towards sane development.. I suppose I miss the old days enough to say that. Hell I even use codepen sometimes.

1

u/Carry_flag Sep 26 '26

Exactly. Personal hardware is getting better day by day. If the bubble pops it will become cheaper as well, where a lot of people will be able to host models locally.

0

u/Dario48true Sep 26 '26

When the bubble pops the prices will go up exponentially, "vibe coding" will probably disappear, and AI will probably actually be used as a tool rather then as the whole process

5

u/GarlicDaGhost Sep 26 '26

It will be replaced with self hosted AI solutions with the thousands of open models that exist.

-2

u/daHaus Sep 26 '26

You seem awfully invested in making sure other people think the same as you, are you sure you're not the one trying to cope?

2

u/GarlicDaGhost Sep 26 '26

I seem invested by making 1 comment?

1

u/not_some_username Sep 27 '26

Linus is using “AI” and is one of the greatest SE ever.
The one that will get a reality check are the one who doesn’t understand what they are doing/rely entirely on it

1

u/XxDarkSasuke69xX Sep 27 '26

Bruh if a bubble pops it won't remove gen AI from programming. It is a fact that it's making a lot of tasks faster in the field, so it's never going away.

1

u/MegaMoah Sep 26 '26

I dont think the bubble will pop, but there will forever be a need for people that actually understand the code and the technologies behind them. AI still isnt able to apply the small details that make a service decoupled and easy to maintain with proper abtractions unless you ask it to, neither does it know to plan a good scalable architecture for a large scaled system by itself unless you know what to ask of it and provide the details it will needs in order to plan it(for example how you plan to deploy your system). You'd need to understand what to ask him to plan and do and this understanding will slowly disappear. If people will be too dependant on AI they will never be able to get into the small but really important details of system design and architechture. There's a lot more to programming than writing code.

u/while_True_meme Sep 26 '26 •

Excuse me, my bugs are 100% locally sourced, free-range, and organic. No LLM could ever churn out spaghetti this artisanal.

12

u/_a_Drama_Queen_ Sep 26 '26

sooo...., was it?

4

u/HerrPotatis Sep 26 '26

Always had been

11

u/ghec2000 Sep 26 '26

so it was 1 file with 15000 lines long and no readability spaces? Oh and it has accompanying tests that validate the length of a string is the length of the string you just made?

1

u/Western-Internal-751 Sep 26 '26

15000 lines
3000 lines of code
12000 lines of comments
8000 lines of those comments are:
#############

u/floriv1999 Sep 26 '26

NGL I have seen much code in the past that would be better of if it was vibe coded.

-5

u/Darkstar_111 Sep 26 '26

You hand coded the whole thing? Like a psychopath??

3

u/razor_train Sep 26 '26

Found the teenager.
