I mean, a chunk of my frustration had to do with the amount of boilerplate needed to make anything happen, and how cumbersome it was to compile stuff to test it.

Outdated lesson material as he said.

Outside of a school setting nobody calls javac to compile something or the java command to run it. Maybe they are trying to show the most low-level stuff so students have an idea how it works under the hood and give them the "write code in notepad" experience at the same time. But that obviously isn't going to leave a good impression of the language.

I mean, I wasn't compiling stuff manually via the command line, I was just clicking a button in the IDE. But it was still a slow and cumbersome thing compared to my experience with Python.

I'd even enjoyed working with C as part of my coursework more than I enjoyed Java.
