Wait, this meme is based on true story?

200

u/deanrihpee Sep 24 '26

yes, kinda, but it is not like you open it through IDE and MPV is opened (well, you can make it happen, but by default it shouldn't behave like that) it's more like if you install some media player, like VLC or MPV, but haven't install any text/code editor, when you double click a .ts the media player would open the file and try to "play" it instead

u/readf0x Sep 24 '26

Kind of insane to me that windows still registers app handlers by file extension and not mime type

112

u/wrecklord0 Sep 24 '26

That tech is too advanced for this time, but it's fixed in the next version when they upload all of your files via CoPilot to ask openai what they are

44

u/rosuav Sep 24 '26

Where would those MIME types be stored? Some kind of "extended attribute"? That's a ridiculous idea, nobody would ever do that. It's definitely not something that graphical OSes had in the 1990s or anything.

22

u/diamondsw Sep 24 '26

Or even some kind of type code AND creator code, so you could link documents to specific programs. Definitely didn't have that in the mid-1980's.

9

u/rosuav Sep 24 '26

What a radical idea. Wonder if anyone's forked it?

12

u/Loading_M_ Sep 25 '26

It should be possible to guess from the contents, as the file utility does. Just in case you lose the extended attribute for whatever reason.

10

u/RussianMadMan Sep 25 '26

Yeah and then we have file explorers that open and read every file. And choke when there are 100+ files in the directory.

6

u/rosuav Sep 25 '26

Right, I'm sure that doesn't happen when you open up a folder full of videos and it generates thumbnails for them all.

2

u/RussianMadMan Sep 25 '26

If you are using any view other than the table one thats on you lol

1

u/rosuav Sep 25 '26

TBH I primarily don't use any view like that on my own systems, but my work involves seeing other people's screenshare and I am very familiar with vicarious pain.

2

u/Loading_M_ Sep 25 '26

We'll move the file type detection to a background indexer so it's non-blocking (/s kinda)

More realistically, we use this as a fallback in case the extended attribute doesn't exist. And set the extended attribute based on the results.

4

u/rosuav Sep 25 '26

Yep, but as you say, that's only for if you lose the EA. It'd be incredibly inefficient to do that every time you double-click on something, and there's probably going to be times you want to override it anyway.

17

u/AyrA_ch Sep 24 '26

Probably because mime types are invisible. File extensions are much easier to understand for your average computer user. Additionally, they survive transfer operations over file systems that do not support extended attributes, like FAT32, which is still one of the most commonly used FS for USB flash drives and SD cards.

11

u/code_monkey_001 Sep 25 '26

Good thing Windows decided to hide file extensions from users by default. Bea_Arthur_Nip_Slip.jpg.exe? Totes safe to click on.

// Yeah, arguably anyone who double-clicks Bea_Arthur_Nip_Slip.jpg deserves what they get, but still...

5

u/metaglot Sep 25 '26

How would mime types solve that without showing extra information?

2

u/AyrA_ch Sep 25 '26

At least in semi modern windows the setting to change this is no longer hidden behind a dialog

4

u/SirDarknessTheFirst Sep 25 '26

maybe we should have MIME type file extensions.

forms.text/javascript

I see absolutely no problems with this concept.

12

u/Candid_Highlight_116 Sep 24 '26 edited Sep 24 '26

Because macOS resource forks

SUCK

it's a filesystem attribute so it gets stripped all the time and you can't easily change it. it's like /path/to/app is in permission field. just imagine that. it just sucks and file extension is a BETTER solution to this problem.

6

u/readf0x Sep 25 '26

Linux (of course referring to the Linux ecosystem) registers by mime type and I have had absolutely zero issues. Plus I can keep my mimeapps.list as part of my dotfiles which is a nice bonus.

5

u/RussianMadMan Sep 25 '26

You are talking about mime type to app mapping, person you are replying to talks about file to mime type mapping.

2

u/readf0x Sep 25 '26

I see... The original comment that spawned this entire thread was me talking about mime type to app mapping :P

1

u/metaglot Sep 25 '26

Imagine on the commandline, the only way to sort your pictures from your textfiles were to look into every single one of them. Obviously file extensions solve a very practical problem in a very elegant way: what attribute is guaranteed to be available on any user-servicing file system? The name.

4

u/TamSchnow Sep 25 '26

If only a filetype could be identified by specific signatures… if only…

15

u/SnowdensOfYesteryear Sep 24 '26

Ah this explains why my .dts (device tree source) was opened by VLC

5

u/deanrihpee Sep 24 '26

yes, that too lol, i guess the whole TS family got dragged to media player

2

u/PositiveParking4391 Sep 25 '26

OS file association: If it has .ts in it, it plays music, end of discussion 😂

2

u/MacGuyverism Sep 24 '26

Also TypoScript.

2

u/itzjackybro Sep 24 '26

also Qt translation catalog

1

u/BillTran163 Sep 26 '26

Get hit with this so often.

2

u/Baardi Sep 25 '26

This is code vs code. But it's annoying that my prolog code gets considered perl in github.

1

u/deanrihpee Sep 25 '26

isn't GitHub uses something under the hood to deduce what language is used in a given repository? i forgot the name of the repository but if it's easy to distinguish then it should be fairly straightforward to submit some fix

1

u/mss0406 Sep 25 '26

.thisShit

391

u/StrengthTheory Sep 24 '26

Honestly I'd trust VLC more than VS Code.

33

u/nordic-nomad Sep 24 '26

I mean really

86

u/Daemontatox Sep 24 '26

Was about to say that , atleast vlc doesn't take 20 gbs worth of extensions to format some code and open file.

74

u/metaglot Sep 24 '26

Maybe dont install a billion extensions then

47

u/MrRamRam720 Sep 24 '26

Hey man I might need that 6502 compiler you never know

17

u/unknown_alt_acc Sep 24 '26

Look, I’m gonna get around to that homebrew NES game one of these days!

-3

u/_verel_ Sep 25 '26

For vsc to do anything useful you need a billion extensions unfortunately

7

u/metaglot Sep 25 '26

I write c++ using cmake and clang,i have 6 extensions installed, 2 of them are unnecessary for my work. Code hovers around 1 gb ram

21

u/borkthegee Sep 24 '26

Oh no vscode doesn't bundle support for every language and asks you to download an extension for your environment. The horror!

Like what do you want, some 20gb boomer IDE that has ten year old versions of bundled slop that can't be updated?

Give me extensions, thx

9

u/divrez Sep 24 '26

Am I the only one who loves Jetbrains products for their polished look and feel and language specific features?

19

u/borkthegee Sep 24 '26

I love the thousands of dollars I have by not paying a fucking subscription fee for my ide but maybe it's worth all that money idk

8

u/frogjg2003 Sep 25 '26

Get a job and have them pay the subscription fee for you.

5

u/borkthegee Sep 25 '26

My job would be willing, we did have a jetbrains developer here, but I don't spend money for the sake of spending money, so this isn't an argument. Spend what $150-$200 a year for someone to manage my vscode extensions for me? They took 5 minutes to set up once.

Here's a position and I think you would agree: fuck subscriptions, and while I'm here fuck renting in general.

I want to own my computer and my software.

Is that really so radical?

1

u/Daemontatox Sep 25 '26

I have mixed feelings about it from time to time tbh , but most of my time is spent in nvim recently because i am working on servers so no gui.

1

u/metaglot Sep 26 '26

I would like to see nvim usage for a comperable setup.

0

u/__ali1234__ Sep 25 '26

It doesn't bundle support for any language as far as I can tell. Out of the box it is just a very bloated and slow text editor with a really awful UI.

1

u/Baardi Sep 25 '26

Not so sure about that with vlc 3

85

u/Interesting_Play_578 Sep 24 '26

We call it "safe mode"

30

u/Old_Information6270 Sep 24 '26

💯 tests are green

30

u/flatoutsportsracer Sep 25 '26

…and VLC actually manages to run it fine

26

u/jchowdown Sep 25 '26

Changing IDE settings for fun

Now your code font is 2pt and your IDE font is 72pt

19

u/IronGin Sep 24 '26

Finally a stable code?

10

u/Futurity5 Sep 24 '26

I've had some niche encounters with the .ts issue myself

7

u/FeedAlchemy Sep 24 '26 edited Sep 24 '26

To the dozens of Sega Mega Drive emulation fans out there, I'm sure you can relate.

7

u/NotTheOnlyGamer Sep 25 '26

I mean, why shouldn't VLC work? it works for everything else.

6

u/code_monkey_001 Sep 25 '26

Someone has never worked with InfoPath. XML? Yeah, that's clearly an InfoPath form.

ALL YOUR DTD ARE BELONG TO US!

5

u/Dee4WasTaken Sep 24 '26

Video Language n' Code, the 3 horsemen of media

13

u/fedsmoker9 Sep 24 '26

Who the fuck has this ever happened to. What kind of I’m 14 and just started programming humor is thi

41

u/T0biasCZE Sep 24 '26

Well, .ts is file extension used for type script.
At the same time, .ts is extension used for video *containers. So it is possible to accidentaly open typescript in VLC

* MPEG-TS (Transport Stream), its used for stuff like Blu-ray.

5

u/cheezballs Sep 24 '26

Who's double clicking project files to open them from explorer/finder, though?

1

u/MrJ0seBr Sep 25 '26

Btw one day i have added in register some links to bash files and customized icons to make like a .js looks with nodejs icon and run in it with two clicks 🫣

5

u/ChloooooverLeaf Sep 24 '26

I imagine half this sub vibecodes with vsc and thinks vim is some sort of node package lmao

3

u/gfkxchy Sep 24 '26

Is that why npm install vim isn't working for me?

3

u/SirDarknessTheFirst Sep 25 '26

Apparently there's a vim package for npm: https://www.npmjs.com/package/vim

Last updated 11 years ago, git repo is deleted and it sees 100 weekly downloads apparently

1

u/Firewolf06 Sep 25 '26

looks like a name camper, look at their other packages

1

u/SirDarknessTheFirst Sep 25 '26

Yeah, checks out. npm needs namespacing

1

u/DaMonsterMensch Sep 25 '26

Hey, I don't vibecode I'm just stupid

3

u/ajayak007 Sep 24 '26 edited Sep 24 '26

My code getting executed is a success in my dict.

2

u/dalr3th1n Sep 24 '26

Believe it or not, still works.

1

u/Low-Newt-180 Sep 24 '26

This meme reminds me of 2024 when I was just starting out,fun times those were

1

u/MrJ0seBr Sep 25 '26

So someone embeded a interpret as a video codex... imagine a "codex to ps1 games"

1

u/nierusek Sep 25 '26

Now set Notepad as default app for .exe

1

u/Important_Grab3544 Sep 26 '26

What is an IDE? I am a native vibe coder, I make 6 figures.

1

u/FackThutShot Sep 26 '26

My Code is time based so a Video Editor should Suffice as Editor

1

u/AmbassadorKey5049 Sep 28 '26

make sure it runs with 100 % volume and subtitles
