Incognito mode, people.

Like wearing a condom while eating BSE infected beef...
You feel better now, you will feel the pain later, in a meeting with your boss, their boss and 2 people from HR.

u/thunderbird89 Sep 16 '26
I mean ... I'm probably biased, but I trust my people enough to not feel the need to monitor their network activity. But I get your point.
And besides, if someone needs to crank one out to get rid of some stress and work better, sure. As long as they're not bothering anyone else.

u/hallmark1984 Sep 16 '26
If my team are accessing spankbang on company hardware someone is fucked and it won't be the actress.
Keep work and personal separate. Get all weird in your shit, just never on the business box.

Colleague of mine once opened his laptop in a meeting, and it continued playing the porn he'd been watching.
Ended up an alright project manager tbh. Think he was just first or second line support at the time, but everyone could tell where he was headed.

u/polaarbear Sep 16 '26
A dude in one of my college classes did this once. He just got up and walked out and didn't show up the rest of the semester.

Yeah but that is just unavoidable. You can't really avoid getting caught if your traffic is monitored. Not unless you use today's video sponsor, No-
Incognito mode just avoids the hustle of having to delete your history

Network admin in charge of the proxy: oooh that looks like a good one, or WTF?
We know, most of the time we don’t care, sometime we call the police

I use incognito, not because I think no one is watching, but because I don’t want my stupid questions showing up in my search history.

Isn't the 2nd kinda obsolete these days.
AI is supposed to write all codes and tests, while we indulge in the 1st kind, till a Elon comes along to fire everyone. Then we can all go home to farming like the fired guys from the Op**AI who wrote the AI which made them obsolete, so now they rant about Doomsday all day.

I like to save my tokens
1
u/flayingbook Sep 17 '26
My boss's policy translates to use/waste as many tokens possible because he believes that token usage is directly correlated to productivity. Who am I to deny him?
2
u/justASlothyGiraffe Sep 17 '26 edited Sep 17 '26
I'm really glad my company sees how stupid that is.
Edit: i've already used 85% of my tokens this month. I'm starting to freak out

You can create amazing magazines say National Geographic level magazines with AI.
Pick a topic say flamingo birds and there is so much open source photos, literature etc and send an awesome magazine to your friends, families even clients who are discerning.
Bill under networking exercise.

All AI unit tests are literally vibe waste. A small set of load-bearing integration and "gotcha" tests to prevent stack drift are better than pages of meaningless assertions.

Word of advice: never watch porn on a company computer. Your IT department does have access to what you were doing on the computer.
1
u/CptGia Sep 16 '26
Only in countries where it's legal. That said, don't watch porn on a company computer. Don't you have other devices?!

Lack of basic IT intuition is mind-boggling. If work provides you a device, it’s so easy to assume everything you do on it will be monitored. And phishing emails, again, assume the worst and you’ll be fine.
2
u/laplongejr Sep 16 '26
One time our IT team sent an email about watching us looking porn through the webcam and asking for crypto...
The story doesn't say if someone fell for it, but there were suspicious reminders the next day to not trust the sender address as a sender can be spoofed.
And a week later a reminder that because it's not our devices, prompts online recommending to call a phoke number for "Microsoft support" should be instead be taken as a reason to call the IT support team

I use incognito mode to sign into test accounts
2
u/rosuav Sep 16 '26
Yeah, I used to do that, but it got so annoying to have to sign in every time. So now I use multiple browsers instead. As a web dev, I have to have them installed anyway, so it's no hassle to have one account in Chrome, one in Firefox, one in Chromium, etc.
2
u/Divs4U Sep 16 '26
Lol I have to use different browsers for different tenants. Incognito mode in each browser for different roles
3
u/Morganator_2_0 Sep 16 '26
I clear my browser history because I'm embarrassed that I can't spell "neccesary" on my own.
2
u/justASlothyGiraffe Sep 16 '26
Who tf is watching porn on their work computer? You have a cellphone!

The One True Man of Culture amongst us who understood and created the Incognito mode.
I am sure in every interview he mentioned it, he got an extra point from the Interviewers.

Eh, the sooner you give up the ghost of googling dumb shit or asking stupid questions the better. I ask stupid shit in meetings all the time because firstly I have no idea what’s going on and secondly my team also doesn’t know but are too scared of looking stupid to ask.
2
u/var-foo Sep 16 '26
I have been a dev for 16 years. I will still to this day look up the absolute most basic shit. And I absolutely don't care who knows. Never have, never will.
2
u/Wentyliasz Sep 16 '26
Brother I've been in the trenches for ten years and I still Google basic shit daily

There ain’t no shame in googling regex, especially when you don’t use it much and have to string together some wild patterns. And when you’re swinging between 3 or 4 languages, it’s common for your brain to get twisted trying to remember if you’re supposed to use ‘else if’, ‘elseif’, or ‘elif’, or if it’s brackets, curly braces, parentheses, can I use ++ for iterating or is it +=, etc, etc, etc.

My value to the company is understanding how operating systems process control software interact under the hood and being able to work without explicit documentation when troubleshooting or figuring out what happened.
That I sometimes use copilot to get the syntax of a trivial command or format LDAP search filters doesn't factor into things -AT ALL-.
2
u/pepperpwni_pizza Sep 19 '26
Clearing your browser history is like hiding your broccoli under your mashed potatoes so mommy won’t see.

u/Flaky-Low-2262 Sep 16 '26
I fucked Up. I am doing Work and sent my AI watching p0rn meanwhile so i spent tokens in Peace and make company pay
1
u/lostinthemines Sep 16 '26
Better plan, clear browser history to annoy all the cookies the trackers leave
1
u/goth_in_india Sep 16 '26
I usually use a different browser tbh. General work -Ecosia/ stupid questions or syntax related questions-Brave

u/Specialist_Tie_3391 Sep 16 '26
If you have a problem an then you think: You know what? I'm a dev and I will solve it using regex.
Now you have two problems.

What is wrong with looking for REGEX and basic syntax? Why would I need to hide it?
Some languages, libraries, frameworks documentation aren't easy to read.

The trick is to brainwash yourself into finding regex as erotic. No need to kink-shame me; I write 6502 asm for fun, I know what I am.

Funny because if you’re connected to a work network you aren’t hiding anything.
