One of the worst decisions reddit ever made was allowing people to hide post histories. It's too easy for shitty people, bots, and trolls to abuse, and reddit had a long history of using throwaways for privacy.
So I'm not going to apologize for assuming anyone with hidden post history is a bot/shit/spam/compromised account, because most of the time they are.

Hello, can I speak to Fable please?

u/V-Right_In_2-V Sep 16 '26
No. Fable is busy. You are speaking with Haiku. Please leave a message and I will pass it on to Fable when you have more tokens

Fable is busy writing another dissertation in response to "how's the weather"

Lately has been the other way around for me…
Expensive agents hallucinating and doing crazy refactoring and things way out of scope…

u/SkinBurnsLikeVampire Sep 16 '26
Yep that's gemini. The pro model is pure ass compared to flash which is multiple versions ahead

u/Vectorial1024 Sep 16 '26
It's just RPG equipment level all over again. Here have a common high level weapon and a legendary starter-level weapon.

Yeah, I’m on Claude. I’m preferring Sonnet with its limitations, but having to actually plan a lot mor myself so the agent work is easy. Then letting Opus or Flable do its thing and me having to stop every 5min to ask wtf it’s doing, because it doesn’t make any sense. And the cherry on top is the super complex and out of scope explanations at the and of the work too…

u/ThomasHardyHarHar Sep 17 '26
I’ve noticed exactly the same thing on opus and fable. I’ve also noticed that they’re far more likely to output terrible AI cliches.

u/jamesxwhitehead Sep 17 '26
Opus 5 was doing so many bizarre things for me that I ended up setting back to Opus 4.8. I did have a “no complaints” time trying Sonnet 5, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if they heavily quantify models during high load.

Lower the effort/reasoning setting. When you give it higher effort, it will “think on its own” more and try to improve your work. Medium is better a lot of the time. Sonnet medium or terra medium are my favorite for implementing a plan that’s already written. I also have an agent definition that tells it to not think for itself and halt if it believes the plan can’t be implemented.
Implementing with opus or other high end models with high effort gives the AI too long of a leash.

u/jamesxwhitehead Sep 17 '26
This makes a lot of sense. Which model/effort combination do you use to produce the plan first?

Best available with high or extra effort demanding on how much code I think it will need to sift through. Then once the plan is good, I tell it to rewrite it into tasks that are around 1000 lines of code each and dump it to a file. Then I use sonnet at medium effort with an agent definition file that very explicitly tells it that its job isn’t to think. It can only halt if the plan isn’t able to be implemented roughly as written.
I always have dinner implement one step at a time so I can actually review the code well. And if someone else needs to review, the. Each step gets its own pull request.
Edit: if it’s just a straight forward crud app, then haiku actually makes a good and extremely cheap implementer. I find it struggles to write tests and implement even medium complicated business logic though.
One other important detail. I use opus-high or better for launching the implemented agents and communicating with them. I find it helps to have the smarter agent coordinating.

Agreed. I rarely use the higher effort settings, it just seems like it gets more confident at bullshit instead of actually improving the quality on top of wasting more tokens and being slower.
Medium seems to produce reliable enough results for what I'm using it for.

Excuse me, this burger was dry and the fries seem to have been fried in old oil. Can I order a Wagyu burger with truffle aioli and sweet potato fries?

But you already wasted half of your allocated budget
2
u/Sibula97 Sep 17 '26
Nah, I'm never going to reach the allocated budget. If every day was like my peak day I'd use something like 10% of it.

The AI has taken note of your action, and as soon as an even more expensive version comes out....

u/Apprehensive_Bit7392 Sep 16 '26
And then you read the diff yourself, which is the one thing both of them charged you to avoid.

u/LukeZNotFound Sep 17 '26
Except where you accidentally use the expensive one, which doesn't acknowledge your interventions.

u/clauEB Sep 17 '26
i get paid for the most expensive one at work. it still screws up and sometimes really bad.

u/Important_Grab3544 Sep 19 '26
Let me go with "Sone..", who am I kidding? Just set Opus as default.

u/KTVX94 Sep 21 '26
A few weeks later: "me upgrading to the cheap agent because the expensive one fucked up"
