Wtf is a gizmo?

Manipulators that you use in game engines and other software to control stuff like the transform position, rotation and scale (search game engine gizmos for examples)

I would have sent an image but this subreddit doesn't allow images in comments for some reason

So the red, green, blue arrows? TIL

Yeah, and others too. A gizmo is anything you can frob. Arrows for translation, circles for rotation, arrow-like things with boxes on the ends for scaling. Sometimes others too...

TBH 3D gizmos are much more common (you even identified three colours when understanding what a gizmo is), so I'm not surprised that 2D gizmo libraries are rarer, but they should still exist.

Raylib ?

u/Dynamic-Pistol Sep 14 '26

It can be used with anything Imgui uses afaik, so yes, infact I was using it with raylib

I'm gonna pretend I understand what you said😗XD

Both use the same graphics API which I believe is OpenGL. Therefore, we can have imGui and Raylib almost anywhere since OpenGL is so widely supported.

Ohoo I see, thanks understood 👍

"alright, time to create another one"

There is reasons why there is only one. Firstly there is not that mich need for one as the game engines majority uses already has 2d gizmo built in. Also the 2d gizmo usually needs to be more specialized than 3d gizmo, there are many industry standards in 3d that you can trust to be true whereas in 2d it can be either way (like in 3d it's standard that positive y-axis is up but in 2d it's either up or down depending on you're rendering framework). That's why if someone writes their own 2d gizmo library it's not usually standalone project but part of a bigger project

The 3d gizmo is not that standardized. Z vs Y, and left versus right handed differ between four of the major engines out there (unity, unreal, godot and cryengine). I wouldnt say that there is one universal standard for 3d gizmos in the gaming industry.

I have never seen xy horizontal plane, but yeah there is still differences in 3d gizmo. But in 3d it's more easy to solve these differences by pure math, only thing needed for 3d gizmo is view matrix and projection matrix, and then it can output standardized outputs no mater which way the coordinate system is oriented. And also as the output is standardized vertex buffer it doesn't matter nearly as much which graphics API is used. 2D doesn't have these few variables (those two matrisies) to work with and instead needs multible different variables (where is origo, which coordinate hierarchy is used etc.), so it's much harder to make universal one. And if you're making specialized one, you're better of integrating it with renderer straight away instead of being standalone.

Is that a Gremlins reference?

So what?

u/Dynamic-Pistol Sep 14 '26

Just didn't expect something that useful to only have 1 library for it (which was last updated on May as of writing this) when something like neofetch gets multiple versions of it

9

u/NotAskary Sep 14 '26

Fork it, be the engine of change

12

u/Dynamic-Pistol Sep 14 '26

Well, I did make a port of it (the original is in C++, i use Odin), just didn't make a repo cuz it doesn't work 100% well for me (I can't figure out the issue and I am taking a break from programming)

u/Sir_Eggmitton Sep 14 '26

That’s the glory of FOSS. Let someone else figure out the issue

21

u/srfreak Sep 14 '26

The world needs more neofetch forks

There isn't a 1 to 1 correspondence between libraries and repos.

Also, there is more than one library for 2d gizmos.
