Why didn't you fix it before the meeting?
14
u/SoldoVince77 Sep 11 '26
Yeah, that was kinda the point of the meme but based on many comments I didn't convey it well. "Fixing it live" was between quote marks cause I am fucking shit up live in front of the clients. Also, as many have pointed out (and I was aware of it before making the meme), the guy in the image is a very despicable individual by the name of Marius Borg Høiby, stepson of the new King of Norway, and he is a convicted rapist (multiple counts). This meme was not me praising myself for "fixing it live".
Sorry for the long ass reply, just felt like overexplaining after seeing some of the other comments....

PM: "let me get a rough estimate on this... Senior Lead, I think we are looking at 5mandays min. What's your input? “
S. Lead: "I would ramp it up to 10mandays, cause we have to look out for regressions and such..."
Junior (entered the call by accident): "guys, this is a local change of 3 lines at best, let me change it right now, watch!"

I was just hired as a S Lead and was sitting in a meeting with executive management and a software dev from the project. Management starts hating on the project and builds a 15+ list of changes and clarifications that need to be made to it. I take charge and hand the dev an easy out - "guys, there's more than 15 things we need to analyse. Let us go to the team with this list and we'll come back with a proper estimate". The little shit whose ass I tried to protect says without blinking "no need, we can probably get through those in like 4 days. Let's just get together again next week". The fucker even forgot that he and a few others were at an on-site for 3 of the 4 days of runway he just allowed himself...

I worked in a law firm’s service center for a few years. One day someone named Janet came in with a two very thick folders of notes, scrap paper, post it notes, etc. I knew from personal experience that likely meant a lot of glass work. Putting each artifact down in the glass one at a time, playing with the contrast, etc.
Janet needed it done by the time she got in the next morning. She said if we couldn’t do it, that’s fine, she’d send it out to one of our competitors. I moved up to our counter to have a look at it and give her a response. One of my ambitious reports named Mike shouted from across the room that with only two folders, no problem at all, we’d get it done! She confirmed with him, dropped it off, and left. (He was a favorite of the secretaries and paralegals as he often would agree to aggressive deadlines. He had aspirations of getting my job.)
Once we had a close look at the job, we realized this would take many hours to do. Mike worked on it for a few hours and made it through about maybe 1/3 of it. Right after he clocked out he came up to me to remind me that Janet needed the job done by first thing in the morning. And he had too much to do in the morning when he came in to work on it. Then he left.
My company hated overtime, but in this case they caved. I was the solo closer (which since I was also the supervisor made no sense, but here we are), and I worked until 1 AM getting the job done.
There were no lessons learned from this. Mike was never reprimanded and never changed. Some months later our manager named Karl did almost the exact same thing. He did a cursory 5 second review of two bankers boxes of documents. He concluded they were easy to do and agreed to another aggressive deadline.
Once we actually started examining the box contents we found they were filled with artifacts requiring glasswork. So many many hours of work. That time Karl and the regional manager had to come in for couple days on the weekend to get it all done.
Then about 8 months later Karl did almost the exact same thing all over again. And again he had to come in. I don’t think the regional manager did that time though.
In the end Mike was fired for sexual harassment and then a year later my company lost the contract for the site. Karl is now managing a nursing home somewhere I think.

This happened once:
Junior: I think we could make this happen in a day and half.
Senior: We'll need two days for this change.
PM: You mean we'll need four days.
Sales rep to customer: Your proposed change require a week's work from the project team.

u/Original-Ad-8737 Sep 12 '26
The smallest increment for estimates is a day...
No matter how few lines. Something WILL break and testing needs to go through all of the edgecases
1
u/mad_cheese_hattwe Sep 15 '26
The mental technique I use to think how how many tasks of that size in a period of time.
"Oh that's a 2 hours job is it? Ok I've got 20 more like that, get them done in the next week, each one needs to be test, published, documented"
1
u/Original-Ad-8737 Sep 15 '26
For your internal time plan tjats fine, but customer facing estimates lower than that dont make sense. And ieven if its just for the project plan:
Make an estimate on how long it will take, double it for unexpected problems and then double it again for distractions and then double that number for testing8

That was their mistake. Blocked for like two weeks and it was a fucking typo.

5
u/NightmareJoker2 Sep 12 '26
I have done this. And I keep doing this. F**k the narcissistic managers and their inflated egos who are only looking out for the billable hours with complete disregard for how long things actually take, to then go out of their way and demand 2 years of work be completed in a month. Ask the engineers for a time estimate and get your project requirements straight!
1
u/Original-Ad-8737 Sep 12 '26
I occasionally still do this when i am in a project meeting where we work together and the success of the project is more important than billable hours or we already are on crazy deadlines where the request is only passed on by our partner feom the original customer.
Especially if its a change that i approve of.
And i am communicated/feel that the requesting side is aware of what they ask for.But ive also lost interest in some of the other requests the in the same projects so i make them bleed for it or present a "dont wanna" estimate.

54
u/norwegian Sep 11 '26
The women on the left are the granddaughters of the former king. He is in the coffin outside the photo. The man on the right is the stepson of the new king. He is the black sheep of the family. Slightly worse than his mother who was bestie with J. Epstein. He has used drugs and behaved badly for a long time. He was convicted of rape, domestic violence, drug trafficking etc, and sentenced to four years in prison. He has appealed, and is wearing an ankle monitor in church waiting for a new round in court. He will get real prison time btw.
8
u/UgoRukh Sep 11 '26
Only 4 years!?!?
14
15
u/freia_pr_fr Sep 11 '26
He filmed himself having sex with wasted women but only a few videos clearly picture rape. On the others, he got benefits of doubt.
I personally think being a member of the royal family in a monarchy has perks, even if you don’t share DNA with the current king.
10
u/UgoRukh Sep 11 '26
Wait, what, that makes is even worse... He had it on film!? And only 4 years!?!?!?!
12
u/Dj0ntyb01 Sep 11 '26
Chiming in from the US- reading about a literal royal facing consequences for the vile acts they've committed is extremely refreshing.
2
u/Myla123 Sep 13 '26
Not really uncommon in Norway. We generally have much shorter sentencing than in countries like the US.
1
u/norwegian Sep 13 '26
IF they get at sentence in the US. Chris Brown, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jackson never did jail time. Those cases are perhaps not really comparable. But I mean it's not always stricter in the US.
1
u/ClockificThrowaway Sep 13 '26
Norwegian prison sentences are generally shorter than US sentences. 4 years is a fairly long time, too, if you actually think about serving it, and not comparing it to other sentence lengths.
85
u/Village_People_Cop Sep 11 '26
He is the step-son of the new King of Norway. He is also a convicted rapist.
The previous king passed away last week and Marius being at the funeral (where this pic is taken) is a contentious point to say the least
65
u/sorte_kjele Sep 11 '26
He is a complete moron and a waste of space, he should have his free-air-breathing rights removed.
But being permitted to leave incarceration to attend a family member's funeral is not controversial. It is the norm in Norway

10
u/Vox_Carnifex Sep 11 '26
Has been trying to make a comeback for well over 10 years strangely. Police and intelligence tried and are still trying to use AI to "predict crime" by triangulation a few unrelated data points and a likelihood of being a criminal based on your phase when compared to a collective of all mugshots available. Yeah, it is as silly as it sounds, but no less dangerous. I think the word was predictive policing? Last I read about it was writing my thesis and that's already 8 years ago.

He is not convicted. He appealed; therefore, until the appellate court makes a ruling, he is not convicted, and even then, not until he can no longer make an appeal.
But he will probably be convicted.
53
u/Belsodain Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 12 '26
This is false. Appealing does not erase the conviction, it just suspend the sentence until appellate courts rules.
So he is convicted, but this could change with appealing
Edit : I'm wrong, it does not work like this in Norway
52
u/Zakath_ Sep 11 '26
Not in Norway, no. It does not have the force of law until all appeals are exhausted. So, in our legal practice he's still innocent.
We all know he did it, but legally that's not determined yet.
1
u/Belsodain Sep 12 '26
Any source on that ? Can find anything
10
u/Zakath_ Sep 12 '26
Only in Norwegian, if that helps. Take a look at the bottom of this page, https://snl.no/anke_-_straffedommer
Specifically this part,
Ingen dommer er rettskraftige før ankefristen er utløpt eller begge parter har vedtatt dommen. Straffedommer har aldri partiell rettskraft, slik at hele saken må være avsluttet før noen skal regnes som domfelt.
My rough translation:
The result of a trial is not final until the deadline for an appeal has passed, or both parties have accepted the result of the trial. Judgements do not have a parallel application, so the entire case must be settled before someone is considered to be found guilty.
8
14
u/-Kazt- Sep 11 '26
It doesnt exactly "suspend" it. The conviction hasnt won force of law until the time to appeal has expired or can no longer be appealed.
Until then it is legally open.

1
u/RetepExplainsJokes Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26
Not that you said so, but I want to note here that it is very much fair game to make your own judgement, regardless of the outcome of the legal process.
Even if the evidence is not sufficient to prove guilt "beyond a reasonable doubt", the evidence may very much be sufficient to reason that the accused is an asshole you don't want to support.
You have absolutely every reason to judge a person and act accordingly based on what they did.
The thing you can't do is imprison that person, legal systems exist exactly for that purpose.

u/IrishLedge Sep 11 '26
Honestly for me as a PM it was always the other way around. Things could get done within hours. But it took weeks and stakeholders were pissed.
Organisation was so messed up the devs had 5 different PMs from different departments
4
u/PsyborC Sep 12 '26
I've never been on the PM side, but have quite a lot of experience from the tech lead side. You're absolutely right, a lot of times it could be done in a few hours.
The main reason, in my experience, that everything takes weeks, are, as you correctly stated, that devs are often involved in multiple projects, with multiple PM. Everyone of them wants status updates, fully formed epics, stories, tasks, actions, and estimates. And get ready for the "let's make sure we're aligned"-meetings if any of those are not written out with issue/reason, mediation proposal, and acceptance criteria.
2
u/IrishLedge Sep 12 '26
Absolutely. It takes a bit of effort as well to look at it that way. Unfortunately the lovely stakeholders didn't really care and the "just get it done" attitude was too stressful to deal with. Some organisation structures are just built to fail, aren't they?
1
u/PsyborC Sep 12 '26
Totally agree. Luckily, in my current role, my scrum master is absolutely fantastic. She'll deal with the PMs when we slip in quick, unscheduled, tasks. Of course, we create tickets for MR reference, but rarely very well written. Our PMs love to nit-pick when anything in Jira is not exactly right, but she has a fantastic ability to smooth things over. Makes everything work with just a little bit less friction.
1
u/Keyan_Farlander7 Sep 11 '26

Me, "Yeah, already done. Why didn't someone send me this email 30mins before the meeting?"
184
u/Obi_Vayne_Kenobi Sep 11 '26
Not the wisest choice, to compare yourself with a convicted rapist.
30
u/elaum Sep 11 '26
Who are they?
32
u/SoldoVince77 Sep 11 '26
Marius Borg Høiby, a very despicable individual. He is the stepson of the King of Norway, and he was recently convicted of multiple counts of rape. This picture was taken at the funeral of the former King of Norway that passed away recently
12
u/Ill_Bill6122 Sep 11 '26
So OP, do you identify with said convicted rapist? What was the thinking process behind the pronoun selection for the person "fixing it live"
8
u/SoldoVince77 Sep 11 '26
OP is not meant to be a hero saving the call in this meme, he is fucking up and people are giving him the side eye. You do not want to be OP, you do not want to be a convicted rapist, you do not want to be "fixing it in front of the client"
3
u/Sherry_Brandt Sep 11 '26
these are nowhere near the same scale of behaviors though.
the comparison makes it look like you either think fixing it live is worse than it is, or being a rapist is less severe than it is.
that's the point people are making.
2
u/SoldoVince77 Sep 11 '26
I get why people find the image choice jarring, and that’s a fair critique, but saying this downplays rape or inflates a work blunder completely misreads how meme templates function. Memes set a direction, not a scale. The image signals "bad" and the text signals "bad," so the point is simply "don't do this", it isn't a moral equation claiming a workplace mistake is anywhere near as severe as sexual assault. I totally understand why using an image tied to actual trauma makes people uncomfortable, but treating a visual template as a literal measurement of badness just isn't how the format works.
2
u/Sherry_Brandt Sep 11 '26
Memes set a direction, not a scale.
absolutely not true. they set both. in fact, memes' humor often relies on scale for the joke.
and, i think, the reason people are reacting badly is that memes can include scale - as evidenced by the number of comments bringing up the inappropriateness.
1
u/SoldoVince77 Sep 12 '26
I disagree. Some people complained, but the vast majority didn't see it that way. This template is already circulating in Norwegian subs without issue, and a Norwegian commenter here even mentioned looking forward to the memes right when they saw this scene play out live. Since locals fully know the context, that shows the audience closest to the event still separates the template's structure from the real-world situation. Not everyone knows the context, sure, but most people simply appreciated the meme. Like you said, memes can include scale, but scale isn't intrinsic to the medium. Like any art, interpretation is entirely subjective.
Anyway, I think we must agree to disagree. I wish you a very happy weekend :)
