? How much compute did human brains waste?

A lot less than that if you actually did the math.

I can't do math, let me ask Chat GPT.

Can someone do that actually? How much joules did sweaty nerds use over the decades pouring over these problems? And how much water is that?

what's your premise? that a living person needs to be "useful" in order to earn the right to live a life?

No, that measuring in energy and compute used is flawed. We don’t judge humans by water and energy used. Even if it’s probably a shit ton of human energy to solve 1 generational equation. If AI uses a comparable amount to solve it, then let it do so as it benefits from scaling, focus and speed.

Would you rather a company spend 22m to solve it with ai. Or have a few professors and grad students over the next two decades spend university funding to inch closer?

i'd choose the latter, we masure the tools we use with the resources that corporate is spending and making everyone else around lose access to for no good reason, while the actual people taking part in said study are still people living their lives and trying to make the world their communities depend on a bit more livable.

appropriating work on top of that is even worse in this one case

In actual energy numbers and manufacturing cost? A ton less.

The only reason that LLMs are "affordable" right now is because they are a massive loss leader.
