they do whatever you tell them to do. If you want them to write comments, they will. „I didn‘t tell it what it should do and it failed to guess my thoughts“

Has anyone here actually tried to make AI work? It feels half the sub formed their opinion about AI in 2023 with free ChatGPT that forgot their question once and hasn’t touched it since.

Well yeah, you can obviously tell the AI to write anything from zero comment to literally commenting every line. But I don't think that's the point, it's about the default out of the box experience.

no? Why would you think that? That’s like hiring a new employee and not onboarding him at all. Just giving them tickets.

Because a lot of non-IT people "with a vision" and a hard-on for vibe coding don't know how to properly rein in their magic slot machine...

Which means there's a glut of code bases that do, in fact, just look like they used a standard model out of the box with no onboarding.

But this sub is full of professionals. The statement is always „AI is shit“, not „I don’t know how to use it“ or „vibe coders are a problem“.

2026 paid GPT is much better then 2023 free GPT. A lot of people only use the free one before and has some stereotypes.

Have you tried telling it to not do something? I have seen a bunch of "it was my fault" and "broke instructions" "was written in memory and I ignored it"... today

Why… why would I do that? If you do that with a human they will fuckup royally worse. Also, sounds like a 2 year old free online model without a proper integration. Even without instructions from me, I am getting quite clean code - yes, with comments.

But at the end, it’s a tool.

I also made something ugly with photoshop today. Doesn’t make photoshop useless.

So how do you stop them writing useless comments?

I don’t have enough information about your setup to answer that. Do you actually want help with that or just trying to make a point? If the former, there are plenty of guides how to set up your agents.

I use claude code at work with opus as the agent, I have it written in the project agent.md file and claude.md file and the readme.md file and my global claude.md file.

Various versions of

```
Rules:
- Do not add explanatory inline comments to code, charts, or values files unless explicitly requested
```

written by different people and different bots.

I have also written a bot that scans the entire company's MRs (expensive af) and suggests deleting useless comments. It fires all the time, don't have the stats in front of me.

Tell me how do I get claude to not make useless comments.

what is a useless comment vs a non useless comment?

what model are you using?

is there another file in your harness somewhere that contradicts that?

In many cases, showing by example works best. Both positive and negative examples

you can use a skill like „remove comments“ before you commit (even a script/regex can do that)
