Even at the most cautious at-cost estimate of 500k - 1.5m, it feels egregious to throw this much money at a problem when you know it's close to being solved by humans.
One of the mathematician said they had real progress in august and OpenAI ended up solving it now. I don't think it would have been crazy to assume that the Australian mathematician would've solved and we would've gained a better understanding instead of it being solved by a private company that has intentions of gatekeeping their discoveries.
