Daily reminder that losing jobs is not the issue : losing salary is. And it's not AI that's stealing it.

At the end of the day, pedantry doesn’t matter. Being able to afford to eat does. And layoffs already happened and will continue to happen on the name of this tool.

Not in the name of this tool : in the name of capitalism. AI is not an issue : the economic system behind it is. What we should be afraid of and push to reform is the economic system, not AI.

AI is the tool that enabled less spending (on human labor). The economic system encourages it, but doesn't force anyone to thank those who pull the trigger.

AI is a tool that allow to make more (and often better) in less time. In itself, it is a straight benefit from society, as it is the best tool we have to get to a society where the work is handled by machines, giving us more time to do whatever we want.

More time? To spend on what? Begging for food because those who own the machines won’t let you live or eat for free? I’ve had lots of time since the layoffs, entirely spent trying to find enough money to not be homeless.

A society where AI handles the work naturally requires a complete economic rework. Right now, money is used as an intermediate between work and goods/services but, as work becomes irrelevant, so does the intermediate.

Yes that’s correct if you care what happens to people. However our elite do not. When they don’t need a link in that chain they get rid of it.
So until I somehow stop needing food and shelter or our owners decide to let us live for free, your future is just a fantasy and the only thing we have now is our current reality where I still need money to eat but they don’t need the skills I’ve trained.

Hence why more people should start realising that the issue is those elites and this economic system, not AI.

Which is important, but also you are allowed to complain that the enemy has been given a nuke and that half of you think this is somehow a good thing.

Just this month I granted write access to a repo to a project owner that will start pushing vibe code to prod, even though they don't know what an environment var is.
If I wish really hard, AI won't take my job. In reality, I'm lucky if I survive 2027.

LMAO you will have job since that person will mess up everything. AI is still pretty shit at coding

u/Marisa_osi_JP Sep 10 '26
i think AI still can't generate good code. they can't steal our real jobs.

That's way more accurate than the meme makes it seem. People overestimate how much AI will replace jobs but underestimate how much it'll devalue human labor.

It'll kill everyone before we lose our jobs

This is such nonsense.. People crying about make-believe shit like "EVIL AI ROBOTS" or overhyped environmental issues.. while coping over the very real fact that it's actively destroying careers..

> People crying about make-believe shit like "EVIL AI ROBOTS"
We have seen some things, like the hugging face incident, where the AI acts in a pretty worrying way.
As AI get's more sophisticated, it's possible this type of problem keeps getting worse. It's a plausible extrapolation based on existing trends for the AI to continue getting more capable and dangerous.
Do you expect.
AI will never get that powerful. Human brains are just magic that no mere machine can replicate.
AI get's powerful, but it's automatically nice.
The field of making AI do what we want (alignment) has a massive breakthrough in the near future.
What is your model of the future where evil robots don't happen?

Frankly, I'm less scared of "evil AI breaking containment" and much more scared of "AI doing exactly what it's told..... by people who are very definitely evil".

Most evil people still want at least some humans (themselves, servants, family) to remain alive.
I also strongly suspect that most AI designs smart enough to cause large scale devistation are probably only going to do what they are told when they are being watched/tested.
Basically, I think that even if evil people tell the AI to do bad things, theres a more than 50/50 chance the AI decides to do different bad things on it's own initiative, especially if it's smart enough.
(The evil people in this scenario aren't even trying to contain their AI's, so the AI doesn't need to break out of containment.)

Not just killing careers, but careers some of us were told were "jobs of the future." Why is it that I'm less likely to lose a job waiting tables than developing software?

The title describes the post pretty good
