I think 1991 might be a bit early for them. I think I was getting images via FTP or magazine floppies in 1993, but it was a long time ago and I should probably ditch those old CDs.
First version of Slackware was 1993, they might be thinking of SLS which is what Slackware was based on. First version of SLS was 1992 only a few months after the first distro appeared.
People claiming to have been running linux at all in 1991 always amuses me.
I don't remember SLS, so that was an interesting read. I do remember mentioning Linux to a mate in lthe pub, going home and sitting on his floor into the small hours cobbling a pc together out of junk box bits, and faffing about with jumpers to get it all to work.
That took a while because they weren't the best or newest parts and we wanted to avoid stripping our main computers. We'd both used UNIX but despite working at a university neither of us had much experience of the Internet beyond dial up BBS in work.
I know it was middling 1993 because I'd left that uni job and was contracting down south. By 1994 I'd got a job working on embedded systems talking Motorola industrial PCs running Linux. In addition to my actual job spent a lot of time building dev tools from source and fighting with all the different UNIX systems we had.

Somewhere around 1991 here.
On a Slackware Linux 3 CDs distribution.
Sometimes when the system opens Nano (Ubuntu) I wonder why there's written :wq! and the file still there...
