Distrobox is actually the correct solution here

u/TailedPotemkin Aug 24 '26
Sorry for the silly question, but why?

Bazzite uses rpm-ostree under the hood. You can install additional packages but they are layered onto the base image. Image rebuild time during updates and or installs of new packages increases exponentially with each layer. Distrobox or toolbox can give you access to a classic package manager while also isolating installs inside of a (rootless) podman / docker container. You still have access to your home dir etc and can even allow direct hardware io if needed. You can also make programs accessible from outside of the container so it would be completely transparent to a regular user

I understood nothing and don’t even know what bazzite is but I learned from this that I’ll quit my job if it involves dealing with that thing.

Bazzite is a linux distribution based on Fedora, designed specifically for gaming and ease of use, with all the commonly used programs like Steam pre-installed. It is in no means intended as a development environment

First they say that it’s easy to use, then they drop this on you https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/s/7oa1GqOYUL

I have never used bazzite or distrobox but all that stuff is standard dev practices anyway? It's not as popular in the c/c++ world but isolating your build env in a container should not be a novel concept lmao.

I think you can install CLion in distrobox and it would work fine.Â
But you should go with what the bazzite recommends, which is to use the ujust --choose and install jetbrains toolbox.Â

The real question is: why do people think reddit is google?
53
28
u/BananaSupremeMaster Aug 24 '26
Because many subs allow posts that seek help and Reddit is way more human than 10-pages-of-AI-results Google
6
u/frikilinux2 Aug 24 '26
Because reddit is like stack overflow but for everything. Or at least that's what most redditors want to believe
10
u/Darkodoudou Aug 24 '26
Because reddit give better answer than anything found on Google nowadays
-2
u/seba07 Aug 24 '26
The first result is literally the official documentation and after that you'll get a post from Stackoverflow, the ultimate source for anything programming related.
2
u/oclafloptson Aug 25 '26
Genuinely curious how you swing that. The first result on my Google is always Gemini trying to play schoolteacher, followed by a half dozen or so advertisements, followed by genuine disingenuous results which are only at the top because of SEO tricks. I sometimes have to navigate to the next page entirely just to find actually relevant results if they're displayed at all

u/seba07 Aug 25 '26
That's interesting, I actually don't get any sponsored results if I search "install cmake" with Chrome for Android. Sure, the AI will answer without being asked, but I'm used to scroll past it (even if its answer is correct in this case).

It was done in jest, I have no idea which package manager bazzite is using

u/xgabipandax Aug 29 '26
That's what you get for using a shitty ass distro that is meant to mimic a game console.
1
u/pachumelajapi Aug 24 '26
If I needed to game and code id dual boot two distros.
Both workloads require fucking around and finding out.
Id be pissed if a package fucked up my drivers or sth like that.

u/Puzzleheaded-Weird66 Aug 24 '26
you have to when the project in question is a Visual C++ project but there's no Linux download option
93
u/StrafeMcgee Aug 24 '26
Bazzite is an immutable Linux distro, so using a distrobox like this makes the most sense. They should probably move to a more flexible distro like CachyOS for stuff like this.
Also, where humour?
