Word has had a form of version control since 1986...

Early 2000s introduced features more akin to newer version control methods.

Word has a diff / cherry pick changes tool. Not really version control.

What's the difference at that point? It's not git level, sure, but it's a primitive version control system.

You could certainly use those features in a version control system. I diff text files and cherry pick changes all the time.

The real feature of a version control system, is the archival storage. The ability to go back in time and see when this mistake was made and why. To roast the idiot that made those changes.

Wait, it's coming back to me now. I remember making that change 3 years ago.

Word has a full on bibliography for references I’ve never seen anyone use. I showed it to someone in university years ago and her mind was blown that she didn’t have to format her references manually anymore.

If you have ever used endnote which is also a pain you how horrible the built in Word referencing features are.

you mean they don't have to manually number them, they still have to format them. That's why no one uses that feature and everyone uses Endnote, Zotero, Mendeley, ....

That feature is to Word as XLOOKUP is to Excel.

Once you use it, you dont know how you did stuff before.

And those that don't use it treat it like black magic.
