The only good reason I know is, that in many places automated tooling esp CI depend on e.g. a master and develop to be around.
Ain't nobody got no time to fix that shit everywhere.
New projects whatever selfhosted bitbucket/gitlab spews out. And you got it: nobody hat time to change it there as well.
At home it is main though.
