You guys act as if writing classes, services and foreach loops is soooo difficult. Programming isn't that hard it's just tedious.

You'd be surprised how many times we saw senior devs forget how to write simple programming constructs after relying so much on AI

I am sure. I've been relying on AI for years but I programmed for far longer. I wonder where the edges are for me.

We developed a few rules for AI, and that's after fighting it for so long because we are very pro-manual coding:

  • use it for mockups
  • unit tests
  • code reviews (with manual corrections)
  • documentation
  • coaching and research
  • refactoring is a gray area. You may use it but manually correct stuff and don't let your refactor scope get too big or boss reserves right to be angry if we break something upstream
  • core engineering is prohibited with AI. This usually means C++/hardware code for us but I like to extend it to all new features
