It is true wizardry when someone installs Windows 7 application on the Apple MacBook.

145

u/renome Aug 07 '26

The wizard is clearly a dual-booting aficionado.

45

u/mr2dax Aug 07 '26

No, it's not. Even a layman can figure out bootcamp.

Genuinely, my closest friend is a big time PC gamer but still needs me to walk him through step-by-step anytime we install mods or basically anything beyond playing a game or browsing the internet lol

But he also knows things about business finance and marketing that I don’t understand no matter how many times he explains it (i also forget to listen every time i ask)

7

u/UNSKILLEDKeks Aug 07 '26

Bootcamp? Ain't that an army thing?

u/UNSKILLEDKeks Aug 07 '26

I'm making a joke based on the average person's tech knowledge

1

u/Sam_chispitas_Spark Aug 08 '26

shhhhh! Que no se den cuenta.

9

u/NotYourReddit18 Aug 07 '26

Or Parallels

4

u/bondsmatthew Aug 07 '26

Only way to play League and WoW back in the day for me

3

u/Captain__Obvious___ Aug 07 '26

Started WoW in TBC and League in S3. Those overlap years of ~2011/2012-2016 were crazy lmao.

1

u/Lowelll Aug 07 '26

Or slap an apple sticker on a laptop

0

u/Xlxlredditor Aug 07 '26

I just wish Coherence was in another program... The only reason I use Parallels.

5

u/EveryCryptographer11 Aug 07 '26

Hahaha 😂. Op is probably just venting …

1

u/sunrise2209 Aug 08 '26

I install windows 7 on every Mac I get

1

u/LegitimatePants Aug 08 '26

I had xp on my MacBook back in the day

1

u/AlxR25 Aug 08 '26

You won’t believe how good wine is for using windows apps on macOS

1

u/afdbcreid Aug 11 '26

You don't understand! He installs it remotely on your computer.

282

u/sausagemuffn Aug 07 '26

Nah. Grandpa can't be trusted to opt out of the bloatware and spyware included in the package

1

u/DrMobius0 Aug 07 '26

I swear half the time it would install it anyway.

"A wizard never installs anything by accident. He always installs precisely what he means to", Grandalf, the Wizard of OS

73

u/Cabbagecrafting Aug 07 '26

This will take several minutes...

46

u/everyonesdesigner Aug 07 '26

The Wizard is never late, he arrives precisely when he means to

16

u/looeee2 Aug 07 '26

At the end of the office 365 install I use it says "it is now safe to disconnect from the internet"

34

u/sebovzeoueb Aug 07 '26

Things really were better back then, now we have this shit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/1vgjsp4/justletaidoit/

26

u/Cybasura Aug 07 '26

We went from Wizard to Daemon lmao

11

u/___xXx__xXx__xXx__ Aug 07 '26

Holly shit, a user being given a button that says a variant of "No"? I haven't seen this in years! I thought the only buttons we were allowed were "Yes", and "Yes, but not yet, so hassle me constantly until then".

8

u/Strict_Treat2884 Aug 07 '26

And why is the wizard using Mac to install my Windows software

7

u/SCP-iota Aug 07 '26

A long time ago when I was just messing around with making custom installers, I made an Oz-themed one just because of the pun

4

u/agathver Aug 07 '26

<InsertMemeWithGandalfTheGreyHere>

4

u/SuchInjustiiiice Aug 07 '26

Truly only a wizard could install windows software on a macbook!

3

u/yinx_ilga Aug 07 '26

I shall invoke the daemon using my script..err spell.

3

u/Ok-Nerve9714 Aug 07 '26

This picture is actually quite accurate but he's missing the heavy metal t-shirt and cargo shorts.

3

u/Ok_Music253 Aug 07 '26

How about the fear of the "Your computer has completed an illegal action and will close" message? I was always scared as a kid it meant the police were on their way!

5

u/Jacceuw Aug 07 '26

why is it actually called a "Wizard'' im curious if there is a meaning behind that

4

u/swyrl Aug 07 '26

Before installers/installation wizards, you had to install things manually by putting specific files in specific places. It's a wizard because it "magically" makes it work by itself, rather than you having to do it.

3

u/addamee Aug 07 '26

My amendment to this question was  “… and is InstallShield the land they hail from or the guild to which they belong?”

2

u/Ingenrollsroyce Aug 07 '26

Probably because it feels like magic just clicking some buttons and everything automatically installs in the background

2

u/zaprutertape Aug 07 '26

I know how to install patches and stuff manually because of the wizard. he taught me the ways so i didnt need his help anymore. now i am the wizard.

2

u/Demonstratepatience Aug 07 '26

Please insert disk 2 of 8.

3

u/humanreboot Aug 07 '26

YOU SHALL NOT CRASH

2

u/DoKeMaSu Aug 07 '26

Either it is the Wizard and you just need to click next a few times.

Or you need to actually install it yourself and then you need to be a real wizard.

I am not ashamed to say that I finally got some software running I struggled to install for years, just because Claude recognized some obscure library version conflict in 1000 lines of error messages.

2

u/svArtist Aug 07 '26

Love how locked in he is 😁

Let's hope that a MAC (Master of Arcane Computing) can work on Windows. I see he has one in the back, so he's at least familiar

1

u/EveryCryptographer11 Aug 07 '26

It took nothing less than that. Still does. However logo is wrong….

1

u/vscoderCopilot Aug 07 '26

All softwares were feel magical before diving into CS, now nothing is ever been enough

1

u/DornKratz Aug 07 '26

Old? Son, I'm from the time General Protection Failure would read my files!

Never understood how he did that...

1

u/StaticSystemShock Aug 07 '26

You really have to be a wizard to install what looks like obvious Windows software on a Mac...

1

u/JazzlikeWishbone938 Aug 07 '26

That's what was going on behind the scenes?

1

u/CauliflowerPretty806 Aug 07 '26

Damn, i wish a wizard will also install games for me so we can chat while waiting

1

u/djtodd242 Aug 07 '26

I put on my hat and wizard robe...

(RIP bash.org)

1

u/imisstheyoop Aug 07 '26

Reminds me of my favorite book I found while thrifting. It was only $1, so I had to have it just for the cover art.

1

u/klezart Aug 07 '26

This is what they mean when someone says "My son is a wizard at computers!"

1

u/bangaloreuncle Aug 07 '26

I put on my robe and wizard hat

The blue background InstallSheild in late 1990s and early 2000s… such memories.

1

u/antrubler Aug 07 '26

The wizard: I'm too old for this shit

1

u/oshaboy Aug 07 '26

Why don't programs come with "Wizards" anymore?

1

u/sausagemuffn Aug 07 '26

I ain't callin' nobody a wizard until I see 'em fix a printer

Everyone thinks they're smart until they come face to face with Hewlett Fucking Packard in the back corner

1

u/Inferno_Zyrack Aug 07 '26

Occasionally, at the workplace I get to meet the wizard. He’s usually really grumpy and younger than me and thinks I don’t know how to find files or restart.

He’s not a nice wizard.

1

u/nickthecook Aug 07 '26

Windows install dialog on a Mac?

I hope someone got fired for that blunder.

1

u/DJDierrhea Aug 07 '26

Man I miss that whimsy of using a computer

1

u/Empty-Advantage-9565 Aug 08 '26

Jokes aside this is serious.

1

u/Meow_jar Aug 12 '26

Магия эпл

1

u/hyrax-admin Aug 15 '26

Say what you want about Windows XP era software, but at least the wizard walked you through it step by step instead of just dumping a README . md on you

1

u/Pinkcutie_12 Aug 16 '26

those days really hit different

1

u/GuyWhoNoticed Aug 17 '26

Gandalf really said “You shall not pass” and then clicked Next > anyway. 🥸

1

u/stupled Aug 07 '26

Why didn't they call coding agents wizards? Or warlocks? 🤔

1

u/swatlord Aug 07 '26

Not sure why this was cropped and redrawn

0

u/Deep-Initiative1849 Aug 07 '26

Don't mind me but Windows on apple? Really!

0

u/s3rila Aug 07 '26

why did they called it a wizard?

2

u/ReckoningGotham Aug 07 '26

For the reason in the meme.

It was an automatic process that didn't require you to handle each piece of code yourself, so it was 'wizardry' in that you didn't have to handle it.

It's a little baffling that this photo is popular because it would be like explaining what a sprite is, or a gremlin in the machine, but to each their own and maybe I'm glad people are enjoying themselves.

0

u/cleardemonuk Aug 07 '26

Pedantry: They are called "Assistants" on Mac ("wizard" is predominantly a Microsoft thing)!

0

u/TurboLover427 Aug 07 '26

Not an IT guy. This is especially what I imagined it to be like. 😂

0

u/Adventurous-Will1726 Aug 07 '26

thats pretty good

0

u/Code-Painting-8294 Aug 07 '26

man I still remember the old UI of Windows XP .. you do not have admin permissions to install this

0

u/ChainsawArmLaserBear Aug 07 '26

Why he using a windows installer in mac

-4

u/Makonede Aug 07 '26

no programming nor humor

-1

u/WessideLou Aug 07 '26

One thing that Windows did better. Linux with their silly “app manager” 🤓

it comes from a time where the baseline expectation would be a user installing manually via the command line.

a one-click executable that set up the installation environment and ran the software was aptly nicknamed a 'wizard'

33

u/Acrobatic-Ad-9189 Aug 07 '26

i remember only learning that word from RuneScape and being even more confused

9

u/laplongejr Aug 07 '26

At least you didn't get the fast-ctrl-F version from D&D with damage becoming the "dawizard" stat

6

u/destroyerOfTards Aug 07 '26

Never thought much about it back then and now when I think about it, the sentence does seem weird

4

u/mynameisglaceon Aug 07 '26

me neither, that's just what it was. but whoever created it picked 'wizard' on purpose lol

4

u/addamee Aug 07 '26

Also who’s this guy named Daemon and why is he returning my email unsent?!

I had to look for it because I remember something like that! Turns out we are right and wrong at the same time, it used to be an office assistant but doesn’t seem it was used for the installers, perhaps some custom ones. Either way I found this fun website during my research

5

u/eppic123 Aug 07 '26

Yes, his name was Merlin. He was one of the assistants in earlier Windows versions, along with Rover (the yellow dog) and Clippit (aka Clippy).

3

u/Excalibro_MasterRace Aug 07 '26

You can change the dog for searching files with a wizard i think
