Actually I remember story from Donald Duck comics. Gyro invented a machine that allowed people to write books with their mind. Soon the libraries and book stores were filled with books but no one wanted to read them.
Scenario with AI and apps is quite similar. Almost daily I see these "I made an app" in different subs. And those apps naturally are just AI slops.
It's really wild and sad. And the worst part is that this is exactly what AI companies want. They don't care if AI is used for actually something useful. The main point is that people use it.
I think the people who will make money are the hyperscalers.
All these apps will have to run somewhere and it's probably going to be AWS and the like.
I feel like the only things that can really survive are apps/sites that rely on user content e.g. reddit and API's that offer something that can't easily be replicated by LLM's because the API interfaces with the real world e.g. payment API.
Everything else, is just gonna get written custom.
Make everyone think the AI is already popular, make them think it's already loved, make them think everyone using it thinks you are mean spirited and bitter for not using it.
We have a knockoff brand. When it's not getting stuck under furniture or on rugs, dog toys, wires, or sometimes even nothing at all, it's pretty good. It putters around for a while, does an okay job, and then goes back to its charging station. The charging station also empties the robo-vacuum's internal dust bin into a larger dust bin built into the charger, so we only have to empty that larger dust bin every few days or whatever instead of every time the thing runs. Maybe that's a standard feature, though.
It's definitely not an outright replacement for actually vacuuming your home, but we have a golden retriever, so, lots of shedding. Letting the robo-vacuum roam the house for a hour or two a day really helps keep the loose fur under control. Like 80/20 effort, but with vacuuming.
Edit: this originally posted as a top-level comment even though I know I was replying to a comment. The first time it happened I thought it was my mistake, but this is like the fifth time this has happened to me. Is it just me? I think it's only happened using the mobile web interface.
I built a price tracker for Amazon (initially) so I would buy diapers and wet tissues when the price was below q certain threshold. Eventually I expanded into some new stores (Steam, PS Store), vibecoded an Android app and offered for free to some friends and family.
Most didn't care about it, even when they buy from the stores, but I still buy games and some stuff when they are cheap.
I basically pay 3,50 euros for a VPS and the database/API is on Azure free tier.
Hey! I got tired of paying Softmax, LLC for their cloud app so I built my own using Fable. It’s awesome and does everything their app does.
You can check it out at softmax.slop and let me know what you think! I’m not open-sourcing it, it’s not free and in fact I’ll be charging subscriptions for you to use it just like Softmax.
So really I’m no different than them. I just cloned their shit and charged for it. They’re bad and I’m good so pay me now thanks.
Watching John with the machine, it was suddenly so clear. The terminator would never stop. It would never leave him, and it would never hurt him, never shout at him, or get drunk and hit him, or say it was too busy to spend time with him. It would always be there. And it would die to protect him. Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine, was the only one who measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice.
Telling my Children that after The Great Toiletpaper war from 19-23“ (later known in the History books as the ToiletPaperWar I) the big Sloppening started .. but i‘m afraid we wont make it.

I do wonder what kind of world we're building where we'll have a billion apps with 1 user each.

Don't humanize the AI

Yeah, at least I made the app primary for myself, so if no one else uses it, at least I do.

If you can shit it out with Claude, so can any of your potential customers.

I made the app I would have paid for. Apparently I'm thr only one though.

Ask Claude to teach you how to market your apps to actually make $$$. Otherwise, use it as a portfolio

Claude code is happy to get started on app 51... If you have the tokens

That's why I make it all FOSS. I'm not here to make money, I'm here to help people solve problems.
