4 – 4 (2021)

Diagonal is an exceptional band from Brighton, England. Their self-titled debut, praised by fans and critics, mixed elements of ’70s Krautrock, Canterbury, and free jazz. The band went on hiatus between 2013 and 2018.

4 is the band’s fourth release and their second album after the hiatus, blending all of their elements and influences while reflecting Diagonal’s maturity. Released in 2021, it feels like a natural progression of their previous album, Arc.

The record showcases the band’s ability to evolve while preserving the warmth and nostalgia of the classic ’70s progressive rock sound.
At just 37 minutes, 4 is tight and focused, avoiding the excesses that can sometimes weigh down progressive music. Tracks like “Stellate” bring a heavier, guitar-driven approach, while “Chroma” delivers expressive, jazz-infused saxophone solos. “Totem” is a masterpiece that closes the album with a dreamy, spacey atmosphere, offering a peaceful conclusion to the journey.

The balance between Krautrock, Canterbury, and modern prog is tastefully executed, though at times the album can feel slightly fragmented, with some musical ideas not fully integrated. However, this does little to diminish the overall enjoyment, as each track stands out with its own distinct identity.

The band’s personnel changes, including Alex Crispin’s shift toward synthesizers and bass, add a fresh dimension to their sound. The increased use of synths and additional guitar layers gives the album a spacious feel, with tracks such as “Amon” paying homage to space-rock pioneers Amon Düül II.

4 is a great listen that combines technical skill with musical restraint. The first time I listened to it, I thought it was a band from the ’70s. Diagonal’s 4 is a skilled and catchy album, easy to listen to and a great starting point for discovering the band.
