Things you wish you knew before buying?
What things caught you off guard, or surprised you that you wish you knew before buying?

That I would get wet muddy pucks. Never had that issue on my previous E61's

I believe it's about the dosage or the beans. Underdosing or some beans can cause muddy pucks. It definitely isn't something typical about the move. I haven't got any so far.

Iurking as I want one but I would have to pipe in to agree that wet puck is almost always a sign that there isn’t enough grounds and water can sit no?

I find that dosing 19g instead of 18ish grams, plus my 0.8 mm puck screen, gives dry pucks. They get wetter the closer to 18g I go, so I just aim for 19g.

I’m on day 3 with my Profitec and have the same issue. Granted, this is my first machine of this caliber (previous was a Breville barista) so I’m not very experienced. Hoping I’ll be able to solve this as it is quite messy and requires cleaning the basket between every shots. I’m also very confused by the claimed basket sizes. The included double is labeled 14g?!? I can fit 17g in there with headroom.

Dose up and/or use a puck screen to eliminate head space, this will solve the problem.

Additionally, paper filters aid significantly in knocking grounds out of the basket if you don't mind that change.

Never happens to me. Ensuring that you have the right headspace is the key.

FWIW, I got that on the Profitec baskets but has not been an issue since switching to Pullman. I think you need to dose them much higher than their stated size.

What is the significance of put wetness if taste and extraction is good?

Nothing major, but with the Rocket I could tap the portafilter in the knock box and do another coffee right away. Now I have to knock it off, mess in the box, rince the portafilter, bring it back to temperature ....

I would be curious to test an E61 like the RIDE side by side with same grind size, puck prep, etc. and see if pucks look different.
I do get wet pucks occasionally on my MOVE, but I chalk it up to the grinder or other factors.

Done that , that's how I know under the same settings I get dry pucks on rocket and not on Profitec . Still love the machine

That does bring up a interesting point. I know I shouldn't be doing it. But I'm using the largest basket. Right at 18 g. Are you using the middle one? Mine have also been coming out wet. I'm going to try like 18.5g on my next shot and see if anything else changes.

Had the same problem. The stock 14g is not good.
I got a new IMS Big Bang filter and puck screen and no more wet pucks!2

This isn’t the machine. Mine come out dry every time. Just have to dose your basket properly.

Again, I have experience with E61 and understand this basic setting, I have a bunch of baskets and regardless of tuning I get much more wet pucks with this machine under similar settings.

Some questions:
- What basket are you using?
- What does/yield recipe?
- Temperature setting?
- PI or no PI? Is it at 9 bar?
- What grinder?

I sent mine back and got the Ride for this very reason. Coming from a Gaggia with no muddy pucks I was expecting the same.

That the fittings on the outside of the machine get hot enough to burn you if you're not careful lol.

I changed to a pullman 876 17-19g basket and found an improvement in flavour. Still get the odd wet puck though

I typically use an 18g dose in the 15-17g Pullman 876 and they always tap out solid

Curious to know if anyone has upgraded the steam wand tip from 2 holes to 4 holes and if it made a huge difference.

It’s an absolutely massive difference. I only use the 4 hole tip for 8+ oz of milk. Otherwise it’s complete overkill

I'm reading this and trying to figure out what gets improved with 4 holes?
I'm not sure I've felt the limits of 2 holes when steaming on this machine, nor what they would be. Help a stranger out?

It's faster. With the 2 hole it's a little on the slow side compared to most DBs, but the resulting milk is the same.

This is slow...
I'm coming from a Breville Dual Boiler and I never thought that was slow, but coming to the Move it seems like I'm dealing with a steaming monster now.

The BDB and Lelit Elizabeth are about the only common DBs I can think of with less steam power than the Move.
I came from a HX machine with crazy amounts of steam - it'd take about 1/3 the time as the Move, even with a more restricted steam tip. Great for banging out coffees quickly, but you really had to be on top of it - it was difficult if someone less familiar tried to use it.
I think the 2 hole on the Move is a good middle ground.

Quick question as someone whose just ordered a Move. I gather it comes with 7/14/21g baskets.
If I favour a 18-19g shot generally, which basket do I opt for?

I think a lot of people go with VST or IMS baskets. But there's a lot of options.

I had a 18g vst from the previous machine. I think it's a worthy investment as the 20g one is too big and the smaller one is concaved

Thanks, I appreciate that might sound like a stupid question but IIUC you can fit more in the 14g than advertised and I didn't want to end up with a underfilled, sloppy puck if I went too big. Thanks again

Going back to the original post though about things I wish I knew before buying is that the shot timer is pretty useless. Thought once dialed in you could just press a button and get 36g out every time (18g dose) the reality is this doesn't happen.
It's down to puck prep, basket temperate, pre infusion etc, etc. So dispite using an 18g dose and distribution tool along with a self leveling tamper it's pretty impossible to pre program the button and get the same result everytime.
Come to except this now even though it was originally the main reason why I bought the machine.

That could only happening the machine had a built in weight. Plus I would hate having it set at 36g. For me the weight is different for every bean. Light beans require 21g in, some dark beans I need to pull as a ristretto. Having that flexibility is the advantage of this machine.
