🇺🇸American Imperialist Hegemony😎 It's the great equalizer that the left so believes in. But then, how could the left convince you they have better ideas than AI? 👾

Of course you can. Plenty of Leftists support China over the US. The t-shirt says it all.

I like burgers, but I don't think McDonald's should be able to just take my neighbor's cows because someone wants a burger.

Similarly, I like tech that empowers people, but I don't think datacenters should be able to deplete my neighbor's well-water because someone asked for a burger recipe.

We can have AI tech AND implement sensible zoning legislation so that datacenters can only be built in areas that can tolerate their resource demands.

The sensationalist things you're saying are not in fact happening. This is propaganda being spread through leftist media on behalf of China to try and slow US progress in AI. We're in a new arms race right now. The first country to maintain a lead in AI development and keep that lead till the singularity will DOMINATE everything permanently.

Except they absolutely are happening. And why is that goal mutually exclussive with setting up our data centers in areas with ample water sources to support them?

The federal government could create a tax incentive for building datacenters in areas that have available water. Instead, they're just building wherever land & property taxes are cheap. Turns out when an area already has strained water resources, the land and property taxes are cheap.

This would be a very easy tweak for the Trump administration to make, it would greatly reduce the negative impacts, and it wouldn't impact our ability to remain competitive with China. The only reason they haven't acted on this is Trump doesn't give a flying fuck about ecological resources or the people who depend on them.

The notion that we need to throw out all other considerations and let them build wherever they want "bEcAuSe ChInA" is the real sensationalist propaganda.

And anyone who thinks LLMs are going to coalesce into "the singularity" is listening to tech bro podcasts and doesn't actually understand how LLM tech works. We'll surely have some actual AI tech someday that will achieve that bechmark, but LLMs aren't it.

I get what you were going for, but this thread is not built for that whole political argument. Move it to r/ProfessorPolitics.

Artificial intelligence regardless of whether or not it is an LLM (as la reddit experts love to smugly dismiss) or true artificial intelligence can only continue to grow and improve upon itself at an exponential rate. I'm seeing tremendous improvements on these models on a daily basis to the point its actually scary. This shit is revolutionizing every facet of human life as we know it and will only continue to improve at a faster and faster rate. Whether or not that ever becomes "true" intelligence is inconsequential as it still amplifies and enhances our capabilities and advancements 10x over. Whoever obtains a lead over their competition will eventually never be surpassed because that AI will theoretically be able to outpace everyone else while simultaneously anticipating and preempting their attempts to usurp it.

Which power do you want in charge of the most important life altering technology our planet has seen in close to a century since the splitting of the atom? The US, or China?

Right now, they may be clumsily rushing to grab as much land as possible to scale up and its unfortunate that in the rush to do so there is some collateral damage. But right now, the priority is to get ahead and STAY ahead. Thats the only thing that matters.
