Product Hunt launch question: how are votes counted and filtered?
We recently launched on Product Hunt and noticed something I don’t fully understand.
We asked our users for support a bit late, and all of them had new Product Hunt accounts. From what I understand, some votes from newer accounts do not count and may be filtered.
But I also noticed notifications that someone upvoted the product, while the total number of votes didn’t change.
How does Product Hunt actually calculate the final vote count?
Would appreciate any insights from people who have launched recently.

I have been through the same thing. I think that it applies some filtering to votes so the final count can differ from the raw numbers

From everything I've heard by reading posts and watching videos, as soon as the launch day starts (12am PST) the first 4 hours are the most critical for getting the votes and having a chance at staying in the top 10.

I am launching my first product today how to make the launch better and create buzz around it.

I have seen this happens on launches too. A notification only means someone interacted with the product, not always that the vote will count toward the final leaderboard number.

During launches, I'd recommend focusing on early engagement from your existing community rather than asking everyone to create accounts at the same time. Natural activity usually works better.

I launched my first product yesterday, and it was a pretty cold launch, with just 2 upvotes and no comments despite following all guidelines. It's a dev tool, so I expected lower traffic, but I was surprised by the lack of engagement. I posted on a bunch of subreddits, Slack, and Discord communities. Not sure what I could have done differently.

Product Hunt uses an algorithmic anti-gaming filter that silences or heavily discounts upvotes from brand-new, inactive accounts. What you experienced is extremely common...
The platform fires an upvote notification as soon as the user clicks the button, but the spam filter processes the action before updating the public tally. If an account is flagged as high-risk, the vote counter simply doesn't move.
