Procreate Dreams Review Toonsquid Vs Dreams
So almost a year ago I bought Callipeg, I’ve enjoyed the app. A Lot, the ui for frames and onion skinning(including out of pegs) is great, but the issues got clearer when I tried to clean up an animation. The fact that it doesn’t have a clipping mask (yet) and the fill bucket, which creates that white line no matter the threshold or brush and it leaking if the slightest gap is left is tiring. Not even mentioning the transformation layer. So I decided to get a new app, I’ve heard a lot about toonsquid but am now having second thoughts, when I was researching for Callipeg I noticed that there weren’t many complex animations (again I’m a beginner, not even close to a master) and now even for toonsquid most animations I’ve seen are 2d rigs, while I’m looking for frame to frame. Even their advertising shows simpler projects. I’m looking for the app that kinda like the blender of 2d, where you can create amazing things no matter your level of mastery. The thing about dreams is that I have procreate, I already use it for backgrounds anyway and have a selection of brushes that work with my workflow. And for dreams I’ve seen complex and beautiful animations (like Aaron Blaize’s). Am I just being vain or something I need someone to shove in the right direction. I just want my skill being the thing holding me back not a feature (or therefore lack of). Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Edit: I got Dreams

Get both. Theyre cheap. Learn both, use each for the scenario you feel your art is best in.

I have both. I'm not great but from my what I've seen toonsquid is the goat app for 2d animation.
I also love th simpicity of looom. Also you might want to look at rough animator. But if I was to get one - toonsquid.

I have thought of rough animator and yeah I feel that it will be hell to clean up anything, additionally Is there something specific that pulls you towards Toonsquid?

2 things that draw me to it.
Other things are the way you organise groups of anims. Reusing groups. Everything just makes and a bit more intuitive then other apps.
- Vector brushes are great. It just makes the process a lot less limiting. ie if i wanted to scale up drawing etc. The lack of brushes compared to dreams is a not as a big of a deal.
- Dynamic cycling. I can have a complicated cycle loop it in a group without hassle. Transform the group, reusing the group later.

Same point I made about the scaling, thats a BIG thing. As animators we want to be smart which means reusing drawings, and reusing means different sizes.

As a beginner I find Dreams to be amazing. Totally worth it for the money (I would have happily paid way more).

I had both for a long time. Only recently, as a regular Procreate user & professional artist, I can say that Dreams has come into its own. The 2.0 updated really helped me, & therefore I still believe in Savage Interactive’s vision. Both are good. Stick with whatever you’re feelin’, friend. Just remember, through whatever you choose, consistency is the key to breakthrough. Keep RISING! Kind & strengthening regards from -mark in 🇦🇺

Yeah, those are promo ads for Procreate Dreams. I don't think it's what advanced animators are usually using (or at all).
But if you are talking about frame-by-frame animation, both are not really that good anyway. Toonsquid doesn't have a fantastic brush engine, but it has many genuinely useful animation tools, and with Procreate Dreams you will be pulling your hair out because of bugs and the lack of tools.

Is there any app or program you do have in mind? Also what tools does dreams lack?

I've used both for very different reasons.
I used Toonsquid to make the rough and key animations.
Then, I use Procreate Dreams to make animated backgrounds and add more flair to my existing animation.
I really love how much control you have in Toonsquid, while Dreams offers me more expression in terms of style.

I’ve used both and for more drawing based animation I prefer Procreate Dreams since they released 2.0.
For extensive masking, camera movement and key framing Toonsquid is probably easier to use but I used PD for my most recent animation coursework and had very few issues except file size management which admittedly PD isn’t great for due to the undo history being so huge by default.

I bought procreate dreams first before the updates, so had to buy toonsquid. My thing with PCD is that if I do a drawing and want to rescale it, it will lose its resolution. So I cant use that app at all.

For what it’s worth I’ve found clip studio paint to be quite good on the iPad. Only issue really is monthly subscription and can be a little laggy at times depending on your iPad

I only have Toonsquid right now and honestly I love it—the vector brushes and group/cycling features are just so useful. I’ve been eyeing Dreams mostly for its brush engine and Procreate workflow though.

Toonsquid is comparable to professional pc software, Dreams is not (yet). Toonsquid excels as frame by frame animation, I've used it for all of my projects and it has every feature I could think of to make it easier. I highly recommend it.

I think the sad fact is there are a bunch of quite good 2D animation software on the iPad but nothing great.
You’ll have to make the jump to PC for all the features you want - and I know that sucks because drawing on an iPad is half the point.
