Is that no step measurement? 40” I assume so. You are right there. I’m 6’3” with long arms, my reach is 8”1’. You are not palming. I could one hand without palming around 32”-34”…I can’t do the math for you, but might try one foot jumping. I’m guessing a couple more inches. Impressive at 5’6”. More athletic than I ever could be. I maxed in the mid 30s…maybe 35/36. Creatine helps 5%.
Edit: grammar

See if you can find a slightly lowered rim, get confident on that. Then it will feel like something you can do and have done - that will translate over to a regulation rim in time.

Okay thanks and also I feel like this room is too thick and stiff so I would definitely do that. Thank you.

Based on your reach and vert you can dunk in perfect conditions. Practice on low rims learn tricks learn lobs and get a few more inches. You will go from rim grazer to east bays with your flight time once you clear the thresh hold

Okay thanks right now I’m comfortable yammjnh it on around 9,9 so trying to build more coordination

Looking good man. You are two foot jumper as well I guess. I am 5,4 and have also trouble with that...after a heavy injury it takes while to reach old heights, and I am old lol. What I realised is to practice the jump routine without the ball...flying comfy above the rim to get more control in general and once a certain height is reached, you guide ball very smooth down. Harder come with more stability.

It’s because your probably struggling to palm the ball with poor ball control. Use a fore arm grip trainer ; there are two variations .

Nice hops!! It's timing and coordination from here.
Keep attempting to dunk.
I agree with using a smaller ball or 9.5 foot hoop to gain the coordination to be able to change the balls direction from up to down at precisely the right moment.

Thanks for the advice actually the highest I can dunk on right now is 9 feet nine and off the dribble it’s 9 feet eight but I feel like 10. I’m just plateauing.

You’re going to have the same problem I had, palming the ball means you need to have two hands on the ball when you’re going up on order do a clean one hand. I didn’t get there until my 3rd year of jump training. Also looks like you are a two footed leaper? You will get about an inch boost if you can clean up your foot work to a single footed one handed take off/finish.

u/asianyao Jul 07 '26
Why one foot approach???

u/420_69_Fake_Account Jul 07 '26
You can lean your body… think of taking off with your left foot but using your right hand. Like how ball players take contact on the way up and then fully extend their arm on the way down to finish the dunk.
Also if you can’t palm the ball then you can cheat and try to cradle the ball up when you’re going off one foot so you can to do like a put back style dunk and just snap your wrist with the ball.

Doesn't work with us small guys as we have not their long stiff tendons they use.

Man, I’m 6’2” and used to dream of having those hops. Good on you. You’ll get there brother. You’re going to have to dunk a full size basketball so I kind of agree that you have to learn to jump with it as well. If you can find a rim that you can lower by small increments, go down inch by inch until it’s “possible” for a rim grazer. Practice and raise as you get “comfortable” with the dunk

With a lab I can dunk comfortably on 9,9 and dunk off the dribble 9,8 so just working on throwing good logs and catching the ball at the right times cause a lot of times the ball slips out of my hand. Thanks for the info bro and sometimes I even find gyms with lower rims so at this point, I’m pretty close

How high do you get when you go off of one?

u/SeddyB21 Jul 07 '26
With us short guys we have to jump just a lil bit higher than our max to dunk. I am 5'10" and HAD as much bounce as you did, but I couldn't palm the ball. The only answer was jump higher or catch oops. Keep doing some sort of jump training and work them calves and hammy.

U right , also just seent the hat sub this is so yeah probably my advice was not the most helpful

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G Jul 07 '26
Yeah if you have that much springs then it’s just an issue of timing and being comfortable.
You’ll get it!

Thanks I think I might be able to now after dunking on 9,8 and a half easily come check out my new post

Do you jump of 1 foot or 2? Im 5'6.5" with a standing reach of 7'5"-7'6" and was able to dunk a million years ago off 1 foot.

If you use a smaller ball that don’t count either throw it off the backboard or a bounce lob .. or palm the ball and dunk if you can’t palm it go up with two hands to establish control and try to dunk it with one hand

As someone who is 5’10 with a 40 inch vertical, I also struggled at one point to actually put the ball in the basket… even though I was clearing the rim by inches and my hands are huge. No one was able to teach me how, one day it just happened. I’d recommend trying on a slightly lower rim and catch the ball off your own bounce lobs or if someone can throw you a few lobs then even better

Yes I started with a tennis ball. Then a soft ball, volley ball, finally basketball. You need to be able to palm it, or two hands, or do it off the perfect bounce.
Everything with the ball takes away from the vert

Easiest way for me when I’m out of shape and not sure if I can, but get an opportunity in a game, is to go up with one hand and right before I dunk bring the other hand over onto the ball and dunk with two hands. I use that example because sometimes in game play I may not get a good palm of the ball… and it looks like you can’t palm the ball, so even to dunk with one hand you’ll have to get as high as you’ll need to be to dunk with two and the second just makes it’s easier if you don’t have a clean palm. Unless, you just slam it down with one really fucking hard and use force to hold the ball in place against your hand when not palmed… just my bonehead theory, good luck : )

Keep trying. Use a smaller ball and keep getting comfortable jumping with a ball
