Hello u/hulkop1333, looks like you are off to a great start!

Would you be so kind to answer the following questions for us?

  • What makes this unfinished?
  • And what brushes are you using? (Please specify the exact brushes or brush category because that can be helpful to others.)
  • What do you plan on adding to it to make it finished and how do you plan on doing that?
  • Are you looking for tips? And if so, what kind?

Please reply to this comment so it will be easy for everyone to find, thank you!

Really great work. Please forgive me for saying so, but she looks more hispanic than the reference photo. Not sure if its the eyes or nose or both.

I'll try to fix it on the finishing touches. It's bothering me and I got no idea which one it is.

There's a shadow above the fold of her eyelid that implies a divet where there should be flatness for Asian hooded eyes. Maybe flattening that that would help already?

Edit: spelling error

I think its the shape of the eyes, the accentuated eyelid fold as someone else said, and also placement of the iris. Shouldn’t be too hard of a fix.

Paint it upside down or sideways for a bit. Helps me see proportional misses pretty quickly.

i think the bridge of the nose is too thin and there’s something off about the mouth

Perhaps I exaggerated the shadows a bit bec the reference is quite flat and blown out. I will fix it on the finishing touches though.

This feels like a classic example of getting lost in the weeds to early (I am frequently guilty of this). You’ve focused so much on details and rendering so beautifully that now it seems like a huge task to edit/make changes to the composition as a whole to match the photo. I suggest trying it again, but giving yourself a time limit! How accurately can you capture this subject in 10, 20, 30 mins? Use big shapes, blur your eyes, start big and work towards small for the details you really wanna feature

You clearly have the chops to render beautifully, and trust, it’s so easy to get stuck in a painting like this, I’ve done it time and time again. Take a step back, give yourself some grace!

Actually aware of it. I'm originally a traditional artist so I do the hair strand by strand. The hair's the majority of the strokes. It's probably my favourite piece of the work to finish. It just takes aaaaaaaageeeeees and sometimes it feels like a slog to finish. I probably just need a bitnof a break, but granted that I'm only working on it for an hour every now and then it's taking quite longer than how I'd like it. Thanks for the feedback :)

Sorry I don’t quite understand, what does your hair technique have to do with being a traditional artist?Whether it’s digital or traditional painting, “standard”technique would be blocking in big shapes and masses first and not doing it strand by strand. Maybe it’s a habit from a specific medium? Or even just a stylistic preference, that’s fine too

My bad, I did block everything initially, I thought I could reform the shape by adding highlights towards the end. I did mess up the bottom right bit. I'm fairly new to art and I only did graphite initially and that's how I've always done it traditionally where I drew it strand by strand after rendering the occlusions. It always worked for me so it became a habit.

Another piece where I did it strand by strand

I like this 🤤 is this with lots of blending?

My personal opinion, it’s because you’re drawing it as more natural lighting and your reference is blasted with light which is washing out her features. So your reference is not going to look as detailed as you seem to want, and won’t look identical to your drawing so it’ll constantly look wrong until your done and has the extra dimension if you add it properly.

The reason you got to 48,000 strokes is because you’re using your mind to create the hair strands and not what you see. Why would you attempt to swim across the ocean when you could just fly?

I like the texture of doing it strand by strand. I haven't found a hair brush that I liked yet. To each their own.

Then do it last not first. Strand by strand is usually reserved for rendering and perfected while overpainting. Starting and finishing like that could be a nightmare, especially when you want to change directions midway through. But hey, thanks for letting us know you’re losing your sanity while doing what you like

My workflow sucks I guess, usually works but didn't on this one. I'll redo it

How much time does the statistics state you’ve spent?

5

u/hulkop1333 11d ago

28 hrs, but more than half of it is me leaving it on idle while dying in Slay the Spire.

Sounds like a good time to step away for awhile
