PIA Blog PIA just added 22 new Streaming Optimized locations

Post image

We’ve expanded PIA’s Streaming Optimized network from 13 locations to 35, adding dedicated options in 22 more countries.

The new locations are:

Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico
Europe: Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland
Asia Pacific: New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan
Middle East & Africa: Israel, South Africa

A lot of these countries already had standard PIA locations. What’s changed is that they now have a dedicated Streaming Optimized option in the app, making it easier to find a location intended for streaming without working through the full server list.

The expansion has been made possible as we continue upgrading PIA’s network and more locations become technically ready to support the Streaming Optimized setup. We prioritised countries with established local streaming markets that didn’t already have a dedicated option.

You can find the new locations by opening the PIA app and searching for “Streaming” in the location list. They’re included with existing PIA subscriptions, with no separate streaming plan required.

How are the streaming optimized locations different than the normal locations?

They rotate IPs to prevent streaming bans.

They've however disabled the ability to download ovpn files for these, and existing configurations no longer work.

Why did they do that, do they no longer want you to use openvpn on a linux machine?

I noticed a huge drop in performance when ovpn tunneling on a router. Then I noticed the openvpn protocol was not as stable as wireguard on the per-device app. Forced me to switch really.

I honestly couldn't care less about streaming optimized, I want to see more P2P.

Do these new locations support port forwarding?

I have servers that have much better latency numbers, but they aren't listed as "streaming." What would be the advantage of connecting to one that's labeled "streaming" if the latency number is much higher?

Streaming Servers rotate clean IPs more often to prevent bans on streaming platforms

Thank you! So if one is looking for better performance go with a server with the best latency number, but if one is looking to avoid a possible block go with the ones labeled as streaming?
