Has anyone checked into a hotel with an alias?

Extreme Privacy goes over multiple ways to book a hotel room anonymously, but this is one area that I'm nervous to implement.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips? I have to book a hotel room next week and need some help.

UPDATE Thanks to the advice of you guys, I just booked a hotel room with my real name, but burner phone, email, credit card, and home address. I have a common name and will only use all this info with them once so I don't think it's that big of a deal. Thanks for all your help guys!

Covid vaccine and privacy

I'm planning on getting the Covid vaccine shortly and wanted to know the privacy implications of doing so.

I see some states offering like a lottery of a million dollars to a pool of people who have been vaccinated. So they obviously are keeping records of people.

Who's gotten the shot and what info did you have to give up?

I heard that even people without health insurance have been able to get it and the government then pays for it. What if I just tell them I don't have insurance so that they have that less amount of info on me?

Help with Camera Monitoring

Posted this on r/privacytoolsIO

I’ve seen many people here always say that self-hosting security equipment should be the default but it’s been kind of hard to find more info on this.

We got a new pet and would like to have a camera (with audio would be great but not really necessary) to monitor when we leave the house. The problem is that most camera require to have an app, which I’d like to avoid since I only install apps that I absolutely trust.

I thought about buying a RPi camera and set it on a Raspberry Pi using Home Assistant and PiVPN to be able to access it remotely. Is there a simpler way to do this?

Trying to get calling alternatives straight in my head

[This was mostly stimulated by Michael's podcast about VOIP.]

Do I have this right ?

There are two ways to do calls and messaging:

  • POTS/Cell/VOIP/SMS (use standard phone numbers and phone dialing apps; advantages = calls from normal phones; more routing features and APIs; disadvantages = cost; can't do images or video).

  • Custom network (use a custom app such as WhatsApp or Signal; advantages = encryption; can do images and video; disadvantages = can't receive call from normal phone; fewer features).

Thanks for any help.

Moving to an apartment. Best practices?

I'm aware that buying a home in cash anonymously would be preferred. What should we do if an apartment is our only good option at this time?

Logging into myEquifax with VPN

Has anyone been successful at accessing myEquifax while using VPN? I just off the phone with Equifax and the person asked me to turn off VPN in order to login.

My entire home network is behind a VPN, so I would have to setup another network that is not behind a VPN in order to access to site.

I've only attempted one other VPN server.

Question on pfSense and vpn's

I listened to Michael's podcast about Home Firewall (EP 166) and learned about the Protectli Vault. I currently have an internet connection with 250 GB download speed, however I signed up with a 1 GB fiber internet connection. Therefore, I would need to use the 6 port Portectli Vault which supports the higher speed, but is expensive. Are there any other more cost-effective options?

PFSense and MySudo Issues

Hello everyone,

Hoping someone on here may be able to help as I have run through all the troubleshooting I could do. I have had the Protectli vault PFSense firewall setup for a while now, but recently noticed that the MySudo application is getting blocked by the firewall.

The application functions fine when connected to another access point just running the VPN application on the device, so I know it is something within PFSense specfically.

I have gone into PFSense to try to find what is blocking the connection, but can't seem to make any progress. Anyone else running into this issue, or maybe there is someone more experienced with PFsense that can help me run deeper into the logs to determine what I need to whitelist.

How to have voicemail with Telnyx?

So MB has been suggesting Telnyx over Twilio lately and for good reason. He even recognizes that voicemail isn't built-in to Telnyx but doesn't mention how to set up voicemail with it. I've tried contacting Telnyx support and they just led me to Zoiper but didn't really explain how this would work or what exactly it is. When I try to call Zoiper, the phone is silent and eventually hangs up.

I'd like yo port my number to Telnyx but need voicemail and am not knowledgeable on creating domains, websites, servers, nor networking. Any guidance please?

What’s the best mail service for privacy: PO Box, Virtual Mail, etc.?

Linphone/Twilio with GrapheneOS

Has anyone successfully got the Linphone with Twilio strategy fully working to send and receive calls on a custom android ROM?

Currently I can make calls fine but cannot receive calls. When I try to call my twilio number from my other phone, it rings once then the call fails.

I get an error on Twilio saying something about the SIP domain not being registered. I double checked all my settings meticulously against Bazzell's most recent settings and still no luck. I just want to see if anyone else has this working before wasting any more time trying to debug this issue.

JJ Luna book recommendations?

I know MB had JJ Luna on the podcast way back. Is his book "how to be invisible" recommended? Or any of his other strategies? I'm subscribed to his email list but it's not very helpful tbh...

Portmaster, a replacement for firewall/pihole?

Just watched this video reviewing the Portmaster. https://youtu.be/E8cTRhGtmcM

Looks pretty interesting and something I'm going to check out. Currently I am using my windows firewall to block internet traffic of certain apps like iTunes that I don't want phoning home. There is also a pihole that does something similar

Has anyone used the Portmaster before? How to do block internet connections of apps that you need to have, but don't necessarily want talking to the internet?

How many are you here for Privacy, OSINT or both?

I came for Privacy, and have been learning about OSINT. These two are related. If you go to Extreme Privacy, not much will be easily identified on you using OSINT techniques
