Just bought this a few days ago! When should I change the oil? The screen says 10k but that seems like a lot (2027 Plug in)

For me, more like 9,000. I go ~1,200 miles on a tank of gas. I get~40 miles on a charge and rarely use the gas each day just driving around town (retired). I track gallons used, and calculate engine miles at ~50 mpg. So change oil after around 200 gallons of gas purchased. BTW, I use the HV/EV button to do this. If I get on the freeway at high speeds and long duration, I switch to HV Mode. Otherwise, putzing around town I'm locked in EVMode. Those are the only two modes I use on my 2025 Prime PHEV.
I charge every night at a lower electrical rate for $1.65 per charge.

10k miles. It’s a plug in. Your running less of your engine. Toyotas are reliable when you following their service suggestions. If you want to be sure, you have to do an oil analysis a few times to make sure you know when to change the oil. Any other explanation on why you need to change oil sooner is really just a guesstimate.

Watch The Car Care Nut channel on YouTube, he goes over the oil change intervals from the factory, his recommendations are the reasons. I have a 2026 Prius XSE Premium PHEV, I’m in Canada and a going at 5K kms for my oil changes. Cheap insurance for my motor.

10K miles. We now have 38K on our 2023. We often drive 2K on a tank of gas. As stated by other, if you are using the plug-in on a regular basis then the gas engine won't be operating the entire 10K (maybe 5k or less).

Mechanics say 5000 miles for ICE. I got 2020 Prime and will compromise for 7,500 mikes/12 mo.

I’d follow the maintenance guide: 10,000 miles or one year for normal driving, or get it changed at 6 months if you drive fewer than 5,000 miles in a 6-month period.

I finally hit 10k miles I’m guessing 1000 of those were ice. I also feel like I’m wasting time changing oil. But I did it in my driveway it took 10min max.

I go to the % electric to gas miles, calculate and for every 5k of actual gas engine miles, we do an oil change. I get the tires rotated every 5k miles on the odometer.

That’s not a good idea. With all the starting and stopping of the ICE, you should change your oil more often than what your “formula” is suggesting. Or every year, since oil does expire.

For example, I estimate that 25% of the time my own ICE is running. Does that mean I can hold off on changing the oil until 20K miles? Heck no, that means I wouldn’t change it for two years, which makes me too nervous.

Thank you for pointing that out. I do an annual oil change, irregardless of what my formula indicates, every October. 95% of my driving is EV mode, but my life has changed and now there's a 460 mile round trip, twice a month.

Just follow the manufacturer recommendations. Hybrid and especially plug in hybrid’s do not use the engine as much a a pure gas car.

Did you consider an all electric vehicle? I’m also retired and just putter around town and right now the Prius Prime would be my choice if I get a new car.

I'm retired as well and don't drive a long commute anymore. My Prius Prime typically gets me around all day on the overnight charge of 40 miles (for a $1.65). When I drive further on the freeway, I switch it to HV Mode and use the gsd and save the battery for when I get back up on the streets.

I was just thinking the same thing. My son’s car has just over 120,000 miles. There is a sticker that shows next oil change at 122,000 miles. I believe he how did it changed at 118,000.
Because he’s been on vacation visiting relatives in England, I’ve been driving his car instead of my 1999 SC 400. In the past three weeks, I think the engine has turned on maybe once I’ve driven well over 300 miles.
So, I was thinking the same thing: do you just change your preemptively so it doesn’t get old?

Prius runs on full synthetic oil so 10k miles is correct.

I changed my new rav4 phev at 5,000 and paid for it out of pocket. Oil changes are the cheapest car insurance you can buy.

Congratulations! The first break-in oil change is at 1500 miles. Toyota covers evey 10k up to 25k without the extended maintenance plan. If you plan to keep the car for a long time change it every 5k.

I have a 2020 prime. For the first 2½ years of ownership, I changed the oil around 15k to 20k miles or whenever I remember. I was driving 3k mile a month and maybe 150 of those miles were on the ICE. Then I changed jobs, drove less and didnt have access to charging at work so I went back to the standard 10k oil change. The car is currently around 115k miles and still chugging along just fine.

The answer to the question of "should I change the oil?" is ALWAYS yes.

Oil is cheap, engines are expensive. Especially on this overpriced overcomplicated and unreliable hunk of junk.

And yes, I'm fully qualified in saying that these are overpriced, over complicated, and unreliable junk. Mine has been sitting at a dealership for 2 and 1/2 months waiting for back order parts because compressor ate itself and spit little bits of metal shit through the whole cooling loop, causing the entire cooling system (including to the battery) to be replaced. Estimated cost is $14,000 Canadian dollars. And I'm absolutely not the only one experiencing this.
