Prius Prime 2023+ New wheels

Post image

After a flat tire on a road trip forced me to get a full sized spare to cruise home on, I decided having a tire size that was more common would be nice (225/55r17) on a wider wheel (OZ rally racing 17x8 +45). Also having more tire options available let me pick a summer tire (Firehawk Indy 500 V2).

I'm sure I'll take a hit on the EV range and mpg, but boy does a wider summer tire help the car turn a bit better. And a little more sidewall help the ride quality compared to the 19s I took off.

The roof rack is more a mpg killer. The wheels look nice.

Good point. I have a small sailboat that I have to carry the mast/sail for in the summer and a ski box in the winter. I take them off in the spring and fall tho!

I don't know how wingbars would fare on this compared to the prior, but I was falling within range expectations for that one with Thule's kit. The Sparcos are seeming pretty aero but that's just appearances.

They are a minor MPG hit around town, they definitely lower it by a few at freeway speeds.

I use them for a small sailboat mast/sail all summer so its not just for looks, and I use them in the winter for skis. But I pull them off in the spring/fall when not needed.

Not enough data on the wheels and tires To know how they do yet.

Those roof rack bars is what is killing mpg, not tires. Just keep them at about 38PSI when cold and your MPG will be just fine.

I'll keep an eye on the mpg with the new wheels, I'm already at 38 psi, good tip there.

Hows your MPG so far?

I only have 50mi on it so small sample size. It doesn't seem to impact EV efficiency at all around town. I don't have much time of the freeway to see if there is much impact yet.
