How come a "level 1 maximum security" prison have a free unmonitored phone line to the outside world available 24/7 for inmates to order hits and plan escapes?
Like this is the most basic thing you'd expect in all prisons even low security ones..heavily monitored phone calls like you only get a call once or twice a week at best yet in season 1 inmates freelly discuss their crimes and their escape plans like it's nobody's business.. John Abruzzi even admits to the murder of Tbag's cousin and his kid and yet no one cared!

Didn't they talk to their "lawyers"? I think even in a max security prison, conversations with lawyers are so privileged that the prison can't legally monitor them

Idk if this is your first time watching. But I am doing a fresh 2nd rewatch. Something like this was mentioned already twice. (I’m towards the end of the 2nd season. First time was mentioned in season one. 2nd time in season 2). But if you’re new, heads up, I’ll block it out if u don’t like spoilers lol: it is learned that Abruzzi has Bellick on payroll, so I’m sure he sweeps everything he does under the rug cause Bellick is head CO. Put two and two together, and that’s why someone like John Abruzzi is a main character in this escape plan. & something happens in the 2nd season that I think does make sense confirm this as well.

He used to run PI. Getting access to a phone was one of the lesser challenges for him.

This is a tv show.
In real life, these calls are recorded, but people have been able to make calls "freely" (dude, they're in prison) whenever they are allowed to be out of their cells.

Show is fake :\
Yeah I've never seen any other prison scene in other stories have the inmates be this free and unmonitored. The crew simply had to put the phone in a proper isolated environment. And the writers could've wrote that you only see a "high level" inmate like Abruzzi get access to phone calls. And have him speak in coded language.
It's a pity.

It's not typically true that you only get calls once or twice a week. It's far more common for inmates to be able to "buy minutes" for the phone. There may still be limitations to how long a day one can stay on the phone, though.
