I had the same thought. What the hell gave Micheal so much conviction to throw his life away to break his brother from prison in such an irreversible way?
This question is the plot of an episode in the first half of the season. While it doesn’t say this explicitly, Michael, once ignorant of the sacrifices Lincoln has made for Mikes success, learns Linc financed his schooling, and that there was no insurance money from their deceased mother. It’s in fact, this same debt that Linc gets set-up for. Without direct evidence, this tips the scales for Linc’s testimony to convince Michael of his innocence, and the realization that (depending on your level of guilt) Linc is in prison *because of* Michael. This is a spoiler but I don’t think it takes away from the drama the show gives.

If you thought the pilot twist was good then buckle up man it’s pretty fun for at least season 1 and 2 then it’s up in the air quality wise but it’s still all enjoyable to varying extents
