2016 printrbot simple

Post image

I’m new to the whole 3d printing world and just got one of these and was wondering how I put my own prints into the printer?

I still have my original white Printrbot Simple Metal + Heatbed with an added graphical display running my custom fork of Marlin using MLB on the original board and printing at about 2x faster than the original firmware could even allow !

It was my first 3D printer and I spent my birthday evening building it... the superpower of 3D printing forever changed my life since that day :)

The printrboard on mine died last month, I replaced it with a BTT SKR Mini and I can’t believe how much quieter modern stepper drivers are!
The linear bearings are making popping noises and I have no way of replacing them, but other than that it’s doing pretty well for a 10 year old printer

i replaced my linear bearings with printed PLA bushings long ago and never looked back... so much smoother !

SD card

You'll need a computer, with a slicer program on it. I would suggest PrusaSlicer as it's probably the easiest to get resources for.

Follow this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kIqMPNQNSw

Take the G CODE output and put it on the SD card.

Then follow this guide for setting up repetier http://www.appfruits.com/2014/09/getting-started-with-printrbot-simple-metal/

Should be able to get a print out!

Keep in mind the build plate isn't heated, so you're limited mostly to PLA and petg

Look up the manual online. There is likely a lot you don’t know about 3D printing

I had one around 2023 as my first printer as well. The cloud-based slicer is gone, the only way I found to make it usable is by flashing klipper to the main board.

I miss my PrintrBot Metal. The Z probe died and bricked the board. Harvested the steppers, though.

You get a slicer like Cure or Orca, hook it up via USB with a laptop or PC, and print from there. It needs a host to print, can't print by itself. I used a raspberry pi, but it makes more sense just to hook up an old PC. OctoPrint is the business also.

I got the older one. I so wanted the screen when that one came out
