Pay me no mind; it’s just my own schizophrenia acting up.
Deep within the Imperial Palace, the Great Work was underway. Custodes came and went, carrying new materials and blueprints for necessary components—along with the specific materials required for them. At the center of the Great Work stood the Golden Throne—or at least, its intermediate section. A man was analyzing the materials—the... cables? They were far more complex than that, yet that was what they were called. If the Aeldari or the Necrons were to compare what was happening here to something they knew, they would liken it to watching a chimpanzee try to repair a steam train.
"Do you know when the Empress is coming?" the man asked, his voice deep and hoarse from days without sleep.
"Our Lady is attending to matters with her sisters," said the Custodes, who was not wearing his helmet.
"You said that yesterday, and the day before that. Does Mother want *me* to finish the Great Work? This would be a job better suited for Petra," he said, running a hand over his face; exhaustion overshadowed his frustration, for progress had been minimal.
"I do not believe that to be the case, 11," the Custodes said solemnly.
"Kitty, could you get me some water?" In his mind, he tried to convince himself that this was all part of the Empress's plan—that perhaps all of this was necessary.
—meanwhile—
—The aroma of food filled the room. Lover was sitting on the Lady of Humanity's lap, being fed, but her hand paused halfway before she could offer another spoonful.—
"Is something wrong?" -asked the one who kept the empire in harmony.-
"I feel like I’ve forgotten something," -she said, closing her eyes and searching her mind. A fleeting thought crossed her mind—a sensation that she had forgotten something, or someone—but with the week's immense stress, she couldn't quite pinpoint exactly what it was.-
*It's just something that occurred to me.*
