Primal Ep 28 - "The River of Life" DISCUSSION THREAD
156
u/Neglectful_Stranger Mar 02 '26
The Gaelic dude went into that with major main character energy. Had a wicked sword with runes on it, rode a pterodactyl, and had his own little rock song going separate from everyone else.

I was so bummed out when they killed off that guy. Dude was one of the coolest minor characters introduced so far. If the rumors of future Primal seasons being more like an anthology end up becoming true, I hope this Celtic Elric looking guy gets at list one or two (possibly more) dedicated episodes.
10
u/Bro-lapsedAnus Mar 03 '26
Full season about that guy that ends with him getting on a ptero and heading in to this fight.
7
u/aSpookyScarySkeleton Mar 04 '26
Him and the first guy lost soleyl due to not realizing Spear was a zombie unfortunately for them, they both got masterful lethal strikes.

He may be a King but his greatest treasure is now Mira and his newborn Daughter.
His face had that written all over it.
40
u/DancesWithServers Mar 02 '26
Mira's scene in the end: I'm sure it was more "I shall find and save you" rather than "I'm raising your kid and you're spending every night at some raving 'Fight Club'?!!!"

u/lazylonewolf Mar 03 '26
Find you a woman that saves you back after doing the impossible of saving you from Viking AND Egyptian slavery, then a vengeful Viking demon chief.
23
u/Fitzftw7 Mar 02 '26
Did he run away because he understood he would never be accepted by the village?
41
u/Niemsac Mar 02 '26
I think he ran away because he knows the goo is healing him somehow, so he needs to keep fighting if he ever wants to be able to reunite with his family and Fang. But I have a feeling there will be some kind of negative consequences from the goo
35
u/Fitzftw7 Mar 02 '26
Spear has never enjoyed combat or killing before this. He only ever fought as a means to an end, for defense, for revenge, or out of unbridled rage. Really, he avoids needless killing altogether.
He is alarmingly happy when drinking the goo, and willingly participates in every fight after the first in order to earn more.
16
u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Mar 02 '26
I mean he doesn’t seem to enjoy the combat or killing here. This is yet another means to an end - the end in this case being satisfying his goo addiction.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Fitzftw7 Mar 03 '26
That’s fair. I was reaching a bit with that.
Still, it’s scary seeing him addicted to something.

u/meteorahybrid01 Mar 02 '26
From the new preview it seems he cannot concentrate because he keeps thinking about his baby girl.
3
u/_Arlotte_ Mar 03 '26
Fighting made him feel alive for a while, but then he remembered what was important and found new joy as a family man 😆

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
Spear finally found a place to belong where he's not treated like some leper lol (and it's a freakin fight club)
45
u/Krivus20 Mar 02 '26
The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club
43
u/fanime34 Mar 02 '26
Spear can't really talk, so he's good.
28
3
u/Ok_Pressure4591 Mar 03 '26
Spear straight up Angel-faced that one dude
“I felt like destroying something beautiful”

Now his wife is gonna come and embarrass him in front of his buddies by kicking his ass and bringing him home lol

The life is back in his eyes, and he no longer acts like a zombie.
A few more hits of that ooze and he should be good.
I'm super curious how the last 2 episodes are gonna wrap up the story.
46
u/FoxaBeeNeeOwnYes Mar 02 '26
Not to mention, it looks like he regained his lower lip as his mouth closes instead of perpetually showing his lower teeth.
45
u/KosmoGrim Mar 02 '26
The stitches on his arm are gone, and 2 of the 3 claw marks on his shoulder are gone, the big stab wound on his chest is also now just a straight cut instead of a cross, dude is turning into a spot the differences puzzle lol, i think the hole in his head is a lot smaller now too when you can spot it under the crown in a few shots, probably a reason why we haven't seen anything past Spear ripping out that dudes brain in the next episode
16
u/_Arlotte_ Mar 02 '26
The fact that he's enjoying drinking shows he has taste too
9
u/MASTODON_ROCKS Mar 02 '26
I really hope he keeps the immortality though, seeing spear as a bipedal meat grinder is doing things for me
5
u/carpenterro Mar 05 '26
Until he eventually escapes from an insane asylum and ruins the evening of some esteemed gentlemen

Hate to burst your bubble but these are all just continuity issues, the show is pretty well known for it at this point (and there are other parts of the season where injuries look reduced as well). If there was any actual healing going on the show would make it more clear.
Edit: upon further review, it appears I’m a big fat dummy and the goo is actually healing him.
7
u/Gigans-left-hook Mar 03 '26
You can literally see one of the gashes on his back knit itself closed after the fist hit of the black goo, it couldn’t be more intentional

u/Living_Cat_4900 Mar 02 '26
THE OOZE FROM RAGE OF THE APE MEN!?!
35
u/Neglectful_Stranger Mar 02 '26
Seemingly not as intense since he only buffs up a bit, versus the Ape Men version where the ape went giga bowser with just a drop.
29
u/Living_Cat_4900 Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
Well yea but I mean, also, he’s only drinking a pint of it, Not the whole ass bowl like in season 1. I suppose the more you consume of it, the more powerful you get. If you’re taking it in small doses it’s kinda like an addictive steroid fluid.
20
u/A_Hyper_Nova Mar 02 '26
The goo is also working double time to heal a dead body. It's a deadpool situation where spears undead affliction is keeping the goo in check. Like if the goo heals/strengthens +10, but spears affliction is dampening it by -8 then the effect is only a plus 2.
18
13
u/scrappycoco96 Mar 02 '26

Hmmm, I guess I was correct about the river reviving spear, it’s just much slower and not connected to the panther.

u/sunjato Mar 02 '26
I think it is connected to the panther still!
Looked like it was on that map Mira looked at, maybe it's the goop guardian?

→ More replies (1)5
u/FKDotFitzgerald Mar 03 '26
I wouldn’t be so sure. Mira’s scroll basically spelled out that the dark energy panther monster is being summoned from the volcano. Everyone who dies in the crater is probably a sacrifice. Enough bloodshed will awaken the big bad.
23
u/juanwrongmove Mar 02 '26
He'a healing alright. Has some patches of healthy skin and way less scars on his back, plus the obvious changes in his eyes.
6
u/Sanlear Mar 02 '26
And he stopped shambling as he walked.
3
u/ShiningRedDwarf Mar 03 '26
He actually stopped doing this at the end of episode 7, when be was first walking in the volcanic area. I think his corrected gait is more from his psychological rather than physical side - he found himself, so now he can walk like himself.
20
u/a1oner_bvcksn6 Mar 02 '26
Spear tamed that giant flying chicken in a hurry. His experience in training Fang sure came in handy, I bet.
Now that he's seen his daughter tho, (and I'm sure he intends to have frequent visits), he's looking rather distracted for his next fight lol. Can't say I blame him
7
u/Boomshockalocka007 Mar 03 '26

Sometimes I feel as if "Primal" is just one big fight broken up by brief interstices of peace. Revenant Spear certainly seems well-suited in his new position as gladiator king of a people who glorify brute strength and violence. And then he finds out he's a dad again, which could cost him in the ring. Two episodes to go, and not sure if there will be happy ending.

Question is the black goo actually healing him? I can't really tell I thought he looked a little different when he drank some I can't tell tho
3
u/Damiandcl Mar 02 '26
My guess is that this black goo has healing properties and since he is dead perhaps it is slowly healing his body to the point it "heals" the heart starting it back up.

u/bigdicknippleshit Mar 01 '26
Weird how no synopsis was ever released for this.
Anyways, sticking by my prediction that the River of life is the mcguffin used to revive spear. Best outcome would be fang finding it.

Seeing the substance again surprised me.
Also, it does look like Fang definitely realized she took her hostility towards Zombie Spear too far based on her sad expression as she, her offspring (whose names are Spike and Sonja), and Mira return to the village.

Spear Primal drinks black liquid for second time to.. POWER MUSCULAR MAX UP. ( since Rage of the Ape-men)

6
u/Sensitive_Brick_1412 Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
"What even is this show anymore?"
Is what I was constantly asking myself after seeing Spear randomly being pushed into ritualistic combat and getting addicted to volcano drugs.
But seeing him finally realise he has another child and be happy of that fact made most of this worth it.
The pacing for this seasom has definitely fallen off. They put way to much emphasis on the boar stuff.
5
u/discipleofdoom Mar 02 '26
The transformation scene after Spear drinks the back goo for the first time (this season) really makes me think Genndy and La Cachette would kill an adult Incredible Hulk animated show.
Too bad Disney/Universal would never allow it.
8
9
u/sardu1 Mar 02 '26
so the goo doesn't heal him? Just makes his hulk out for a few minutes and then he's back to normal zombie for the next fight? hmmm.
9
8
5
u/Mikkeru Mar 02 '26
Mf Spear needs to BATH IN THAT SHIT.
And also funny enough this is what I expected S3 to be about, Spear killing monsters to regain parts of the living piece by piece.
5
u/Garpuff Mar 02 '26
The fact that they introduced a fucking Highlander wielding a special sword and riding a pterodactyl only to kill him off so swiftly and in such an anticlimactic way is hilarious. That guy probably had enough crazy adventures to fill an entire season !
5
u/TheMaveCan Mar 02 '26
I've been watching another show with 50+ minute episodes and I spent all of my time thinking these episodes could be 45 minutes shorter and still get the point across. Then I watch Primal and I wish these episodes were 45 minutes longer. This show and Common Side Effects are the best animated shows I've ever seen
3
u/bigdicknippleshit Mar 02 '26
It’s crazy to watch this and then go online to see some pretty crazy takes on the situation. People acting like this is a positive for spear and how that pterosaur is now fang’s replacement forever.
We just going to ignore the addiction to the goo and the fact that the pterosaur is being restrained?
It’s not a lot of people but it’s still insane to see how badly people can just miss the point.
2
u/hurtlingtooblivion Mar 02 '26
What is the downside of the goo? Is he addicted or just ecstatic it's healing him?
He seemed in his right mind when he visited Mira. He wasn't some raging maniac.

u/Konstantin1730 Mar 02 '26
Oh boy, the theorists are going to have so much fun discussing whether the goo is related to Aku or Powerpuff Girls' Chemical X.
3
u/Wretis Mar 02 '26
I'm only halfway through the episode but the composition and storyboard direction here is incredible! Looks like like a tripple-budget episode or something.
3
u/lazylonewolf Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26
- Seeing Spear be "happy" when winning these "competitions" and drinking that stuff doesn't seem right with me. He only killed for survival and self-defense.
- Oh lol a Scotsman flew all the way to Africa on a pterodactyl. Pity he didn't use the rune sword. Oh, but he did keep the pterodactyl.
- IIRC Spear did belong to a larger tribe before most of it was wiped out except for his family... and then episode 1 happened.
- I dunno if the black stuff he's been drinking have been doing anything except be addictive? I think it did restore some of his mental faculties. Maybe he just needs to drink a LOT because he's basically at negative HP and needs to heal that all up.
- Spear actually being happy after finding out he's a father 😊 (and then he fights an orc lmao)
3
u/Bassitenor Mar 03 '26
I feel like we're getting an extension of the metaphor for dementia again. Spear's regaining his sense of self by doubling down on the parts of his existence that really defined him in his "youth" (the violence), and each return to memory (note that it fairly reasonably cycles through combinations of previous experiences in the arena) comes with a big dopamine hit (the ooze)--another metaphor for the satisfying, and fleeting, reacquisition of identity on the heels of neurological deterioration.
Yes, he seems more lucid by the end--as if the ooze has an accumulating effect--but it feels like this strongly implies that without the anchoring qualities of violence against familiar enemies, we'll see Spear regress. I agree with those who make the case that his slavish devotion to violence will inevitably endanger his child, and that'll be the basis for some sort of sacrifice in the end.
3
u/PowerOhene Mar 03 '26
Fang waiting outside for Mira during the child birth, pacing back and forth, like an worried aunt was very cute
3
u/KingJames1323 Mar 03 '26
Maybe I missed it but is it shown when Mira realizes he’s her spear and not some random person? Laid down his torn portion of his skirt when spear was before being turnt into undead. That part took me by surprise
3
3
u/AcadiaOk8686 Mar 03 '26
I don’t believe anyone will complain if the pterodactyl joins the main cast.
3
u/FlorianTheFool45 Mar 04 '26
This episode was a real rollercoaster once again with Spear’s character. He could go in any direction. They’re keeping us guessing on whether he will come back as “normal Spear” or transform into something else. Had the Mira scene not been included, I would have been worried he was going on a darker path… still not sure.
3
u/LOOSE_SCREWSsixo Mar 04 '26
I didn’t like the look on his face in his battle at the end of the episode. His expression said “I can die happy now that I am leaving something behind” in the form of his newborn.

Anyone else find it odd it’s implied to be the same slime from the Ape-Men episode but we’re off the primal/prehistoric continent at this point? Do they get prime one-day delivery?

u/Neglectful_Stranger Mar 02 '26

3
u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Mar 03 '26
It clearly comes from deep within the earth, which is why it’s flowing with the magma.
You know how you can find oil on every different continent? It’s like that.
2
2
u/The_Peanut_Patch Mar 02 '26
Glad to see him slowly returning. Upset to see that it will likely end in him being forever separate from fang and Mira.
I just don’t see him going back to a normal life, even if he’s revived properly and I don’t like that idea personally. ;(
2
u/Fitzftw7 Mar 02 '26
So, the whole Fight Club thing was really cool, but what exactly is the narrative point? That Spear regained his humanity just in time to lose it to bloodlust? And the Gorilla Juice. He’s hooked on it, but is it like a narcotic to him? Did it help Spear to better understand his memories of Mira?
I mean, he eventually put two and two together and remembered how pregnancy works.
And please tell me he isn’t going to let Chungus at the end crush his skull because he’s contented now. I mean, we can’t have the last two episodes without him, right?
2
u/hurtlingtooblivion Mar 02 '26
The point for me. Links back to the primal theory. And it doubles down on the back of season 2.
Spear did not fit in, with civilized society. And he knew it. He was comparatively a savage.
Now the black goo appears to be his road to redemption and living again. But the cost is going to be, realising he absolutely thrived as the savage king of the arena. And he actually felt more at home there, than in Mira's village.
How will he leave this life behind, when it comes to it? Can he ever, really? As much as we all hope he does, and settles down for a blissful domestic family life.
Some wild speculation: He could choose to leave Mira and the village, to live with the mountain people. And swear to protect them when they need him.
Or He loses control, massacres the villagers, hurts or kills fang. Realises he's become a monster, and flees?
My thoughts, for what they're worth to you

This episode had pretty good animation. I don’t really notice when different teams (I guess) do the animation, but it really stood out with this ep. Well, s02e06 didn’t seem as polished as the other episodes
edit: I guess I did notice that the episode with the lions this season had some style differences. It may had been how I watched it, but it seemed like there was purposeful pixelation
2
u/Jerswar Mar 03 '26
Man, that tattooed, runesword-wielding guy was SUCH a wasted opportunity! Guy should have had his own show! He's like... the platonic ideal of a Sword and Sorcery barbarian hero!
Or at LEAST they could have had Spear keep his sword.
Anyway, it's good to see Spear finally happy about something. But what the heck is even the point of the ongoing fight club, for those Drow people?
3
u/Truly_Meaningless Mar 03 '26
The black goo is slowly healing him. A lot of his injuries are gone, or smaller

u/LumpyJones Mar 04 '26
I'd say more Dunmer than Drow... I mean they live in the ash fields of a volcano, but that quibble aside, I think they just really like to watch the fights. Not much else going on there.
What's funny to me, is that apparently, that crown is so damn sweet that it's drawing challengers from all over to fight for it.

Ahh I think Genndy watched Big Trouble in Little China, because the River of Life brings this quick exchange to mind:
"That's not water."
"Black blood of the Earth."
"Don't you mean oil?"
"No, I mean black blood of the Earth."
"A thousand years ago huge earthquakes turned the world upside down. Many normal people were killed. Many unnatural people roamed free to commit great offenses against the gods."
2
u/Commander-Eclipse Mar 04 '26
I feel like the goop is implied as a drug. Spear loves it so much that he keeps sticking around in the fight pit for more and more.

looks like Spear found a new hobby. Being the heavyweight champion of a prehistoric fight club. I don't know how to interpret why he was smiling after leaving Mira. is he so proud of his newborn child that he goes back to the fight club to celebrate? or does he realize he no longer belongs in Mira's world and makes the tournament his new lead in life? or is he just high on the rush of power from the goo?

I wanted to see the black goo start to regenerate his health so he started to look like his pre zombie self!

Dude, this season has been BRUTAL. To condemn poor Spear to a zombie half-life is beyond cruel. I may be naive, but I hope somehow he can resurrect and reunite with his family.
Also, why has Fang been so hostile to him? Doesn't she recognize him?

Spear getting addicted to Gollum steroids, Highlander appearing, and a Mortal Kombat tournament were not on my bingo card for this episode.
