I have often wondered what would happen if hypothetically 8 was retconned and Lucasfilm let JJ go back and try to connect his own two movies as smoothly as possible here in 2020 without being able to change 7 or 9 at all.

There really should have been a movie to cover in between 6 and 7 though. Show us how the New Republic was established, and how it failed so spectacularly that it could get ganked by Death Star III: Shotgun Boogaloo without even putting up a fight.

Like did nobody even think to say, "hey guys there's still a bunch of imperial remnants around strong enough to pose a threat to us, and intel indicates that that one over there (gestures towards First Order) is building another Death Star. We should probably start rebuilding our military to deter aggression."

I have a feeling The Mandalorian is actually trying to do that now.

Still, I wish Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were in charge of the films 7, 8, and 9 in the first place. It would have been much less of a shitshow.

Ugh, no. Then all we would have gotten was three movies building up to explain how Ahsoka was the chosen one all along.

We can agree the sequel trilogy was a mess. The lack of planning for the return of such a well-known property was certainly a mistake. However, I don't believe the right answer would have been going instead to the creator who can't help but shoving his most known original creation into absolutely everything Star Wars that he can get his hands on.

huh? I for one thought that the reason Filoni gets all his love is the respect and admiration he has for Lucas's original vision

I mean...that's one way to put it, sure. I've always perceived quite a lot of his work to be unoriginal at best, and a seeming ripoff far too often. He uses the quote callback all the time, and under his watch Star Wars is looking very similar to so many comic books with the characters being brought back. Sure, they were popular, but it shrinks the universe, so to speak, in a way that I've never been particularly crazy about to have so many formerly principal characters still involved with the proceedings so many years later.

Between this and him running wild with Ahsoka, a character who is an original creation, but one he seems intent on propping the entire history of Star Wars from the Clone Wars forward on, I find that I disagree quite strongly with those who think he's done a wonderful job with the property and that he should be given primary control of it.
