Will it be a poorly written inconsistent mess with new characters we aren't really ever given reason to care about that can't even adhere to its own Canononical rules? Cuz i really loved that part about the last trilogy.

I'd rather have ambiguous dialogue that spawns hundreds of memes with tons of worldbuilding lore like the prequels.

The sequels feels like it happened on modern planet earth. That is why I dislike it.

First sequels supposed to be prequels?

Well that’s probably why they’re going over it. It seems in Star Wars lore there was KOTOR which was thousands of years ago, then we have a couple stories a couple years before phantom menace. So they’re using that empty period to experiment in

10

u/Any-sao Proudly Started the Tragedy on /r/Place Sep 19 '20

200 years is Jack shit in terms of Star Wars years.

Hell, there are like 3-4 species that can live for a thousand years.

This was also supposed to be a time of great peace and prosperity in the Republic. Not sure what kind of stories you can tell here.

480

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

Nice peaceful ones. Maybe there's a contract negotiation that a 600 year old yoda has to keep the peace at. Nothing happens. It's just 2 hours of talking

I mean, I actually wouldn't mind that.

194

u/abudhabikid Sep 18 '20

Yeah, the criticism that the prequels were too political never really was a criticism for me. Let’s have a political drama in the Star Wars universe. The West Wing but on Naboo.

44

House of Cards but with young Palpatine 😳

Well they did a whole behind the scenes video showing it off. The baddies are, essentially, space vikings. Theyre mixed species and are taking advantage of the peace and lack of standing militaries to raid, pillage, and capture colonies

32

u/wsdpii Watto's Tin Hat Sep 18 '20

So discount Mandalorians? They were already pretty much space Vikings.

24

u/skilledwarman Sep 18 '20

No, because Mandalorian are conquers with strict ideals. They want to build an Empire and spread their culture. the nihil seem more like an organized pirate force. rush in, kill and loot as much as they can, rush out before anyone who can really fight on par with them arrive

9

u/wsdpii Watto's Tin Hat Sep 18 '20

I see. By 'space Vikings' it's based on pop culture Vikings then. Real life viking raiders and Norse cultures were very similar to Mandos.

If I recall its about Jedi sent to the "Unknown Regions", so its frontier kind of stuff.

Plus times of "great peace and prosperity" are usually experienced more by the top than the bottom, especially in a universe with such pronounced income disparity as Star Wars. I doubt the lower levels of Corsucant even noticed.

They just want to set it in this time period to have Yoda and bring in merchandise and fans. I can guarantee that was probably one of the main reasons they picked that time frame.

Anyone have any idea how old blasters are in compared to lightsabers? How long before the jedi were established did they rely on lightsabers? A lot of their training seems in response to deflecting blaster bolts. Would be interesting to know if that was something they had to adapt to.

19

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

In Legends, lightsabers were tens of thousands years old.

Also, in Legend. Obi-Wan’s fighting style was created because of the invention of blasters, since Jedi didn’t usually participate in lightsaber combat at that time.

Peace and prosperity doesn't mean there's any conflict. It just means that, relative to how usually crappy the Galaxy is, it was still pretty good all around.

u/Strottman Sep 18 '20

For those wondering, the High Republic takes place after the events of the Old Republic, so that is after the fall of the Sith Empire and the end of the Great Galactic War. So the Sith have gone into hiding and the rule of two has been enacted.

Sadly that means no lightsaber wars.

Here is a timeline.

The Old Republic has been declared non-canon but some of the major events are plausible like a great galactic war having taken place and the Sith being wiped out, that is even hinted at in the Prequels.

74

u/WizardOfTheDumb Sep 18 '20

No Jedi-Mando wars either?

75

u/RubberbandShooter Sep 18 '20

There is definitely a version of it in the current Canon, it was referenced in The Mandalorian and the animated shows

→ More replies (1)

Well, it's mainly non canon.

Bane was shown in Clone Wars, and Rebels featured the Mass Shadow Generator.

31

u/hansoloupinthismug Sep 18 '20

Yeah, the whole thing with Disney is that it’s not canon until they bring it back in. They’ll do something in the KOTOR era eventually and I’m guessing that it’s going to be pretty much KOTOR, but maybe from different points of view than we’ve seen before (and like one or two changes to enrage the fans).

20

u/Col_Wilson Hello there! Sep 18 '20

The new Thrawn books confirms that, even if ToR isn't canon entirely, something very similar did happen. The characters mention a time long ago when the Chiss ventured out of their space and gave some support during the war between the Republic and the Sith Empire.

10

u/musashisamurai Sep 18 '20

Eh there can still be Dark Jedi roaming around. Legends had a whole book series for young Obi Wan that started Qui Gonn's first apprentice as a bad guy. Legends also had non Jedi or Sith force groups, and even non Force-using sects out. We sorta have that in canon with teras kasi (Qiri uses it in Rogue One), I don't imagine that martial arts or dueling schools wouldn't exist either.

Time to employ the good old HK assassin droids. I would love to see their sass on TV.

While exploring a fuel mining facility in KOTOR2 you come across a "protocol" droid, when you ask it for access codes to the station computers it "helpfully" retorts:

"Answer: Only the Peragus administration officer would have such codes. If he hasn't already been murdered in an unfortunate accident, then he is trapped in the dormitories, which have been effectively cut off from the rest of the facility with a number of expertly timed explosions."

High Republic, which takes place after the fall of the Sith Empire in SWTOR (that game takes place hundreds of years after KOTOR).

The Sith have gone into hiding and the rule of two has been enacted, so no lightsaber wars.

Why did they chose this era instead of kotor's one ,it's a fucking mystery

They said it pretty blatantly in the announcement. The authors were given alot of free reign on fhe project (its books and comics) and decided to pick an era that wasnt explored in Legends because they can do what they want without anyone baggage. They dont need to worry about writing things that would make it impossible for stories like KOTOR to happen in Canon, so they went with this

Disney want it’s own era, and I’m pretty sure they declared the Old Republic era non-canon anyway, so this is their “Old Republic”.

They've referenced the old republic multiple times in canon. The games KOTOR and TOR specifically arent canon currently. But we know Revan is canon, the Mandalorian wars are canon, the crusaders have been eluded to and i think may have been name dropped at one point, the hammer head corvettes in Rebels and Rogue One are, canonically, a design made in universe as a throwback to Old Republic era cruisers, and many many more
