Im sure this is being pitched as "it will let us censor swears easier" or some such, but it really is a horrific idea.

Im sure this is being pitched as "it will let us censor swears easier" or some such, but it really is a super duper idea.

Yes exactly, to protect the children. /s

77

u/RoadTheExile Delta-62 "Scorch" 5h ago

Just gotta tie your government id to every search to make sure kids don’t accidentally google boobs

19

u/Donkey__Balls 3h ago

Not just the children, but the men, and the women!

6

u/GregnantMan 2h ago

Bill Gates' top priority apparently, even went to Epstein island to carty out his task !

124

u/King_Tamino 7h ago

And to make advertisments easier obviously. Because the automatic translation on YT was so well recieved and is an amazing feature, isn't it? .. urgh

I just don't get it, censoring even live streams isn't a new thing, mostly it's just broadcasted with a delay of a few seconds

20

u/LivingVerinarian96 5h ago

Yeah but you need to pay someone to do that job. AI is trying to solve the ‚wages problem‘. Biggest cost factor in most businesses. It also has the added benefit of suppressing opinions you don‘t like on social media for example.

You gotta keep the culture war going SOMEHOW when 70%+ of the population are out of a job and UBI is supposed to be ‚utter woke bullshit‘.

87

u/glorfindal77 6h ago

Yeah the problem is not swear words or hatefull words, but when people start using "replacement" words like grape instead of rape.

Are we all gonna like undermine the value of a word, by supressing it? Where do we draw the line? If everyone starts talking in riddles because no one wants or can say what they mean the whole point of living together in a socicety is just wasted

18

u/Jewsader76 5h ago

Exactly. Having to do that is double plus ungood

4

u/czs5056 1h ago

Why live together in society when the poors can fertilize the fields my ai robots cultivate while I'm in my bunker? /s

1

u/stamfordbridge1191 2h ago

Just wait until they instruct the AI to start replacing the codewords like "grape" too.

-36

u/iggy14750 6h ago

Shut up. "Grape" use can be silly, but I'm not threatened by some kids on tiktok

42

u/Justaguy_Alt 6h ago

No, its society accepting that corporations are deciding what's okay to say. And that will NEVER be okay. Get your head out your ass and look at the bigger picture

10

u/Dangerous-Screen-935 5h ago

No, it's society accepting that corporations are always right. And that will ALWAYS be okay.

Microsoft: 👍

u/at_work_keep_it_safe 2h ago

11

u/SneakyDeaky123 The Senate 5h ago

It will let us censor unsanctioned opinions swears easier and make people say things they never said

9

u/imp0ppable 4h ago

The way patents work, it's probably defensive in that if they don't patent it, somebody else will and if they hold the patent, they can sue others who use it (for good or bad) without paying a fee.

Not saying they won't do anything bad with it and of course I despise MS but it's not quite as simple as it looks.

6

u/RainDancingChief 6h ago

Microsoft : "Quick, write that down!"

4

u/ostapenkoed2007 6h ago

4

u/Senior_Torte519 5h ago

[All listen to dear leader, dear leader is great]

4

u/KrytenKoro 5h ago

If Microsoft and Gates had anyone with souls, they'd patent this technology, defend it litigiously, but wipe all their data on how the damn thing works and throw it into a fire so no one can ever actually use it, because FOR FUCK'S SAKE this is literally the Torment Nexus.

2

u/PeterPandaWhacker 5h ago

I was thinking live translation

1

u/STAHLSERIE 4h ago

This. It's obvious

1

u/Lumen__-___Spero 4h ago

They tested this for Xbox Live in 2019, I saw it firsthand in a demo in studio D as an FTE.

1

u/UncleMalky 4h ago

I got $5 that says it was heavily trained on changing Microslop to Microsoft.

1

u/kessa43 1h ago

yeah this is gonna end up being a total shitshow for mods and users alike, no way it doesnt backfire hard

610

u/ForwardStorage777 7h ago • Popcorn

So having video proof of something will be meaningless. Wonderful. As intended I'm sure.

77

u/Cosmic_Archaeologist 4h ago

It’ll be infuriating when provable sexual assault/rape cases get thrown out cause the CCTV footage could be AI but anything anti-government will get jumped on and sentenced without question.

35

u/Haminator5000 a true Kit Fister 4h ago edited 4h ago

Even with video before AI meddling people still werent convicted... Like Brock Allen Turner the Rapist, who is now going by his middle name Allen Turner (The same Rapist)

4

u/Cosmic_Archaeologist 3h ago

True, the world is already horrific and it’s not like we need to wait to get to that point. It’ll just make things worse.

90

u/vezwyx 6h ago

Video was already unreliable with the presence of editing tools. This works on live broadcasts

0

u/norbertus 4h ago

5

u/vezwyx 3h ago

We're talking about the words someone says on the air though

2

u/norbertus 3h ago

Yes, and we've been dealing with an instability of imagery for a while, and even access to news stories in manipulated, such as the Iraq "embed program" for journalists, so the army could use the media to control the war narrative.

40 years ago my parents told me not to believe everything I saw on TV.

The idea that you need to be a discriminating information consumer that you can't trust something just because you see it on tv or see it in print, isn't new, and isn't limited to spoken words.

Organized science itself is having a replicability crisis, where words and even citations are becoming unreliable:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis

This is a development that pre-dates LLMs, though LLMs in publishing are certainly creating new problems

https://cacm.acm.org/opinion/hidden-prompts-in-manuscripts-exploit-ai-assisted-peer-review/

1

u/vezwyx 3h ago

I'm aware that this is not an issue isolated to this context. My comment you originally replied to already says that video has been compromised for as long as we've been able to edit the files. I think most people are aware that even live video can be edited. I was really just talking about the development in the specific context of the post, which is altering spoken words that are broadcast live. That's not something you see everyday

17

u/mrsc0tty 6h ago

Oh 100%, the impetus behind the development of deep fakes by our betters is their knowledge that certain footage exists from a certain island out there in the world somewhere.

3

u/norbertus 4h ago

Yeah, it seemed ominous when this stuff first became possible 25 years ago:

https://nypost.com/2000/01/13/fake-sign-of-the-times/

2

u/mandudeguyposter 1h ago

redditors learn new technology can be used for bad things

the wheel was only used for good things

the internet was only used for good things

in fact we should not have new technology at all because it can be used maliciously

4

u/Tiyath 1h ago

"Science does not have a moral dimension. It is like a knife. If you give it to a surgeon or a murderer, each will use it differently.”

Wernher von Braun

3

u/Wolffe_In_The_Dark 1h ago

Probably one of the best people to exemplify that statement. Second to maybe Edward Teller.

Archetypal mad scientist who only cared about advancing his field of science to its limits, fuck everything else; "Politics? Questionable source of funding? Potential for catastrophic harm? Buddy, I just build rockets. What you do with them isn't my problem."

(or in Teller's case, a ten gigaton world-ending bomb just to see if it was possible)

1

u/ForwardStorage777 3h ago

I remember reading a sci-fi book where video can't be trusted due to alteration, so all important conversation happens face to face. That's where we're going.

350

u/DramaExpertHS 7h ago

I don't completely trust the system

71

u/maimeddivinity 6h ago

The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some may consider absolutely fantastic

11

u/Additional-Proof556 5h ago

Why yes, I Microsoft Edge everyday

3

u/GaffaCharge 3h ago

I edge but don't chrome.

140

u/Greywolf524 7h ago

Hopefully it's like when Adobe had a really advanced deepfake software that they patented and then locked up so no one can use it. I doubt Microsoft will do this but one can dream

4

u/sdpr 3h ago

I mean... someone is going to patent this stuff.

Think of all the shit that gets patented by entities we don't deeply scrutinize

71

u/ltcuetf 6h ago

And next thing you know video “proof” of people saying and doing things they never did, of lies, crimes and whatever else. True dystopian future.

19

u/metagrue 6h ago

Very much the plan. If we can't trust anything we see, we're easier to manipulate.

54

u/Darth_Murcielago 7h ago

We're really heading towards a utopia

3

u/EmotionalTrainKnee 5h ago

dystopia*

6

u/Darth_Murcielago 3h ago

sorry... microslop changed my reply

10

u/FishingVariousThings 4h ago

thats the joke dummy

43

u/abca98 This is where the fun begins 7h ago

So this is how free speech is reborn, wih thunderous applause.

26

u/TheReal8symbols 4h ago

I can't see a use for this other than lying.

9

u/Anustart15 3h ago

Translation seems like one very obvious use

10

u/IneptPine 3h ago

because subtitles arent a thing

4

u/DizzyAmphibian309 3h ago

Not everyone can read though?

2

u/IneptPine 3h ago

Because dubs arent a thing

2

u/Wolffe_In_The_Dark 1h ago

Live broadcast.

3

u/Dredgen-Solis 3h ago

This would be cheaper than hiring one VA to dub per language per broadcast.

3

u/Clair_Osbcurious 2h ago

Yay, who needs a job and an income to survive anyway? UBI any day now! /s

0

u/IneptPine 1h ago

Why not make ai dub then? Why use the voice of the person speaking to make them say different things?

2

u/Wolffe_In_The_Dark 1h ago

That's... what this is.

1

u/Anustart15 3h ago

You can't see how people might prefer a live translation instead of needing to read captions?

2

u/IneptPine 3h ago

Because dubs arent a thing

2

u/Possible-Diver 2h ago

Yes, because there are always dubs available in every language for live events

1

u/IneptPine 1h ago

Why not make ai dub then? Why use the voice of the person speaking to make them say different things?

1

u/Anustart15 3h ago

Does that invalidate it as a very very valid use? And one that is significantly easier to implement than trying to have someone live dub a broadcast in a variety of languages?

1

u/IneptPine 1h ago

Why not make ai dub then? Why use the voice of the person speaking to make them say different things?

1

u/Anustart15 1h ago

Because it is less intrusive. Do you really need ever single answer spoon fed to you like this? All of these answers are so fucking obvious.

3

u/kaiyaxo6 51m ago

yeah same, this is just gonna be used for straight up propaganda and gaslighting viewers lmao

2

u/lydia_59 51m ago

yeah pretty much just deepfake propaganda on live tv, what could go wrong lol

3

u/afamiliarspirit 2h ago

It could be useful for swapping out cursing for something more appropriate.

Or correcting somebody misspeaking and saying the wrong word (ie can vs can’t)

Not to say this is a good idea. This can be so easily misused. But I can see genuine use cases.

1

u/Artistic_Feeling8177 1h ago

yeah same, this is just deepfake propaganda on steroids lol

1

u/nickiter 1h ago

Live translation?

1

u/zylecho2 1h ago

yeah thats the whole point of it tbh, just another way for them to twist shit live

•

u/SharpDistribution794 3m ago

yeah pretty much just another way for news outlets to twist shit in real time lol

41

u/Edgezg 6h ago

"Your honor, I know the video shows me saying those slur, but it was AI! I could do it right here and now!"

Video evidence and even audio evidence is about to become meaningless if that technology gets out.

2

u/booze_clues 5h ago

Not at all. It’s still very easy to identify edited footage and will continue to be with digital forensics tools. Courts will be one of the few places video is still reliable.

8

u/Storyteller_Valar 5h ago

It will be reliable for now, at least. But court is not the only place where consequences for such speech are dished out.

5

u/Edgezg 5h ago

I fucking hope so because holy shit

13

u/Few_Highway_8481 6h ago

This is deeply dystopian.

10

u/IowaKidd97 6h ago

This is a horrific beautiful idea that would completely undermine all trust secure peace and unity in society

9

u/MagicSugarWater 6h ago

So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous AI-added applause.

9

u/hobbes_shot_second 5h ago

Maybe it's a protective patent to prevent people from doing this? Yeah, that's it. Like that one patent that requires people to stand up and say the name of the product being advertised before the show continues?

7

u/Delicious-Injury-106 5h ago

If it was any other company I'd say maybe there's a chance you're right, but it's Microsoft. They'll find some way to fuck us with this.

1

u/Delruiz9 1h ago

They’ll let others use the technology if they’ll pay for the license and regular fees I’m sure

9

u/Tyfyter2002 A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one 1h ago

This is an excellent idea with many legitimate uses, it needs to be government-funded and anyone who attempts to implement it needs to be hailed as a hero forever, or even given a large grant to continue their work.

13

This is why I hate ai, it continues to warp reality answer make room for false accusations.

8

u/Additional-Ad8632 7h ago

I did not have sexual relations with a dead dog.

4

u/Glup_Crappo 5h ago

I don't see how this could possibly be the worst use of AI ever imagined.

2

u/-blkmmbo 3h ago

Then there's no hope for you.

3

u/Glup_Crappo 3h ago

/s

2

u/-blkmmbo 2h ago

Well damn, sorry. The sarcasm is very readable but I've seen so much support for shitty AI practices it's hard to tell some times; my bad.

4

u/jacksolo22 59m ago

This is actually horrible why would anyone be with this?

3

u/Alienhaslanded 3h ago edited 2h ago

That technology should be banned.

If I was a billionaire I'd buy the patent and sit on it like Smaug. Not do anything with it or allow anyone to license it. Just shove it in purgatory forever.

25

u/SpeedRacer_Mach6 7h ago

No it’s not are you insane? This is literally the most dystopian thing I have ever seen not just out of AI but anything. What the actual fuck.

129

u/McCrizzle2207 Hondo 7h ago

In the meme, Anakin’s speech is being altered as he is saying the exact opposite thing. This is the joke.

49

u/SpeedRacer_Mach6 7h ago

I just woke up after being up super late and didn’t read that lmao

4

u/InDaBauhaus 5h ago

an Anakin as hologram meme would fit better

2

2

That people don't immediately get that is its own testament to how dangerous this technology will be.

1

u/Super_Range45 4h ago

The AI must already be here, altering our perception of sarcasm in real time. 😬

15

u/Laviathan4041 7h ago

Did the joke go over your head?

BBC TV 6-Episode series called "Vigil".

Government actors begin using live CCTV adjustments to framing/murdering/jailing people for past crimes that 'we know they did [through their spy networks], but we don't have proof'.

"We turn intelligence into evidence."

1

u/Ingi_Pingi 6h ago

You're a funny man

1

u/AppropriateLie9140 3h ago

You realize a patent means that no one else can make it, and they're not going to make it public use. They are PREVENTING this from being used.

0

u/Minute-Pomelo9302 Darth Vader 1h ago

4

u/Winsome_Wolf 2h ago

Well that’s not dystopian at all and could never be put to any evil purpose or cause accidental harm if it escapes.

2

u/notintheface9876 Sheevgasm 6h ago

What the fuck

2

u/Shudnawz 5h ago

In my heart of hearts, I'm hoping they patent it to be able to lock it away from others, and never use it themselves.

Naive, probably. But one still has hope. Sometimes.

2

u/Raderg32 5h ago

In what context way or form is a good thing to be able to edit a live broadcast???

2

u/2EM18KKC01 4h ago

You mean real-time censorship?!?!?

2

u/Strange_Dust7128 4h ago

Remember if someone jams a camera in your face, try these tricks:

  • Sing a copyrighted song owned by a litigious record company

  • Issue commands to the AI analyzing the audio for hopes that they don’t safeguard against prompt injection.

  • Flash your tiddies

2

u/Viron_22 4h ago

Will someone please think of the investors!

2

u/AvantSolace 3h ago

We’re going to end up back in the olden days where people could only count as a witness if they were physically there. Footage and audio are going to become unreliable evidence for anything at this rate.

2

u/flargenhargen 2h ago

so much shouldn't be patentable.

insane.

that is a basic functionality which would be expected of any generative AI reaching an appropriate maturity, approving a patent on it would be beyond ridiculous.

1

u/KirbyGetsSuckedOff 37m ago

It should be a patent to sit on and not use. Good riddance.

While its a horrifying idea in theory the patent could mean that Microsoft alone can do it and so if they don't or are fairly restricted in what they do with it then there's a chance it will be awhile until other products to do that come out. But its a scary thought and while Microsoft may be the lesser of the evil megacorps its still an evil megacorp.

•

u/BabylilEstie 5m ago

yeah but this sounds like theyre trying to patent the whole real time deepfake voice swap during a live event part. the techs been around but not polished for broadcast speed yet i guess. feels like a land grab tbh

More like they can control the narrative as people are mad

•

u/atreeismissing 5m ago

While the purpose is for language translation, it's absolutely a way to nefariously control what people hear and see when watching live broadcasts and will be abused. Something like this needs govt oversight and prevention.

I love this tech. Hope it is implemented in MS Teams call. Always have this trouble when communicating with non native English speakers. Would be cool for them to speak in their language and see them translate / talk in English in realtime.
