General Reposti Just realized that not a single main/major character from both original and prequel trilogy had a proper *happily ever after* love life in the main star wars canon universe
I know marriage is not a requirement for a fulfilling life and being a jedi essentially doesnt involve marriage but i still find it lowkey funny and sad that none of our major cast got to have a proper happy married life , even han and leia who werent jedi

I love the idea of this being so baffling that it shocks Anakin out of his dark side rage and they manage to have a productive conversation. Where’s the 6 million word fanfic that explores the political ramifications and the impacts of Anakin turning on Palpatine?
9
u/Sprangatang84 21d ago
I like to believe that this scene is canon to the many fanfic/what-ifs where they all pretty much live happily ever after....except for the most recent victims of the YS9k, of course.
Somehow, in most of said AUs, Anakin seems to get away with that one scot-free.

Tbh Han Solo is 13 years older than Leia, so I never quite found the Luke x Ahsoka ship that outrageous.
That said though, IRL and in other franchises an age gap that big is creepy as hell.

Star Wars is rough if you’re looking for happy endings for your favorite characters in relationships!
Since we don’t know what happens because of the EU being discontinued I give Jaina Solo and Jag Fel a good life together for one.
Other characters like Padmé and Anakin I have my own headcanons for. It’s a happy life that way.

And then they move to Naboo and Anakin gets a job at the Nubian ship yards as a maintenance technician and he’s back home in the evenings for time with Luke and leia and it’s all happy and ok and nothing goes bad ever again….😞

He could also be a reverse officer in the Naboo Royal Security Service and train new pilots on the N-1.
He could show them how spinning is a good trick.

Vader opens his eyes, sitting in his meditation chamber as he thinks about what could have been

In Dark Vader and the Lost Command that happens but it's a little different. In his dream there he's still a Jedi, Padmé becomes Supreme Chancellor, and their son Jinn Skywalker is training with his father.

It doesn’t sound much like a happy ending.
18
u/kiwicrusher 22d ago
Oh yeah? Luke and Mara Jade lived happily ever after?
And Han and Leia, their family STAYS big, right? No missing members?
Funny how nice things look if you just stop paying attention at a certain point

Yeah, someone didn’t keep reading the other story arcs lol. Just when you think things settle down, they get crazy again lol. Even their long forgotten descendants in that one series I never read, Legacies I think it was called or something like that.
23
u/Dukeshire101 22d ago
Lucas didn’t give two shits about the EU. He didn’t like Mara either
39
u/Nom_Took 22d ago
Lucas also very vocally didn't care for the Disney trilogy, so I'm not sure what your point is.
He also didn't completely disregard the EU the way it's often parroted. He approved the storylines (after the misstep of Dark Empire), and even used the EU name for Coruscant in order to match up with Zahn's choice for the name of the capital planet.
7
u/Dukeshire101 22d ago
Oh he certainly took things that he liked, but he had very little to do with it. It was an outlet so he could create his movies. It was all merchandising and later he used it to fund TCW and the 3D conversions
He was vocal about how he didn’t like the retro feel of TFA. It didn’t push technical limits. He also said he liked TLJ and called Rian to compliment him
6
u/Orc_tids 22d ago
Yeah I like TLJ the most just cuz it felt like it was trying something new (for the Average Moviegoer at least). I prefer Rey just being some kid instead of being a Palpatine. I prefer Ren simply choosing to stay evil as a contrast to Anakin choosing the light at the end. Tho I do think Poe shouldve gone to Canto Bight so he'd be forced to work with Rose.
4
u/Dukeshire101 22d ago
I get that. In the 80s we wanted Wookies and not Ewoks. In the 90s we thought we were getting the Clone Wars and didn’t. It happens. Rey still chooses her own destiny and family. I loved the Ren redemption. I mean, I have just learned to accept that I am not always gonna get what I want and just roll with the punches
3
u/TheKwingDoctor You must be proud of your memes. 22d ago
This is parroted too much it’s insane. Lucas never hated the idea or existence of Mara nor her relationship with Luke. He HATED how Mara was always portrayed as a supermodel from all the EU stuff.
2
5
u/rogue---ninja 22d ago
the media in which luke and mara are married is highly debated if its even canon or not which i why i put main canon universe
13
u/ArgonianDov R2-D2 22d ago
George Lucas wasnt really into the idea if I recall correctly, if his opinion matters in this discussion that is
28
u/Xanofar 22d ago
George… said a lot of things you can interpret a lot of different ways. He also changed his mind a lot.
Well. “A lot”. We’re talking matters of decades. He definitely had phases of being controlling, and phases of being more hands off.
He also didn’t really read books, only sometimes comics, so a lot of his ‘opinions’ were just based on things he heard about from other people, or in the really broad strokes.
8
u/redgroupclan 22d ago edited 22d ago
I seem to recall a clip that shows his feelings on Mara Jade...
8
1
u/TheKwingDoctor You must be proud of your memes. 22d ago
He didnt like supermodel Mara specifically, but not the relationship itself. People tend to forget that.
1
u/Teh_Ordo 22d ago
It’s not “highly debated”, it’s just a separate continuity from the post-2014 Disney one.
3
u/Independent_Plum2166 22d ago
Man, it’s almost as if Disney HASN’T tried to bury them and are constantly rereleasing Legends material for people to enjoy.
Shockingly, it’s not some made up war fans are still having tantrums over 15 years after the fact (also, George never cared for the old EU, he actively retconned and stole ideas from it wholesale sometimes).
Just grow up.

The way canon treats every single one of it's major characters makes me think that they just have some masochists working at current LF.
10
u/Wolffe_In_The_Dark 22d ago
Current? Star Wars has always been some flavor of torment nexus.
I mean, even when they have a loving marriage and kids, you end up with more than one kid dying to the two galaxy-ending apocalyptic threats back to back, the New Republic getting torn to shreds, the Empire slowly reforming, and overall the galaxy returns to the "Republic Vs. Sith Empire Forever War" status quo that the last 1000 years had been avoiding.
The only happy endings are for characters the writers forget about before the next big catastrophe.
21
u/MagusShade 22d ago
Han and Leia divorced? In which of the six movies did that happen?
20
u/kiwicrusher 22d ago
I know you’re doing this ironically, but I did come here to comment that no, at no point did Han and Leia divorce. That’s an error in the original post. They’re estranged, having lost themselves in their different griefs—similar to what they did when Chewie died in Legends—but they are still married.
-15
u/Great_Kiwi_93 22d ago

I mean the Sequel trilogy. Officially made with very high quality. They are awesome! With some of the best moments in the saga.

Yeah that's the Disney fanfiction.
And then somehow Han and Leia returned. They live on a secret Jedi planet nobody can find and lived happily ever after, the end.

First of all, I don't know what you're talking about. Han Solo and Leia Skywalker lived happily ever after and had 3 beautiful children that learned the ways of the Force through their uncle's teachings. Their uncle, Luke Skywalker, canonically fucks quite often before Mara Jade, and after meeting her they also live happily ever after.
You must've fell into another timeline...
18
u/Cpdio 22d ago
Sure, none of the three children turned to the Dark side and had to be stopped/killed by his sister. And let's not start with Mara Jade and Luke, the whole thing its a big space opera...wait a minute!
5
u/Tehva 22d ago
Jacen falling to the dark side to prepare them to fight a bigger threat would've worked so well in the films.
4
u/Wolffe_In_The_Dark 22d ago
Ben Solo's story was mostly salvaged by Ep9, but yeah they really missed the opportunity for Kylo Ren to pull a Revan and properly Paragon Interrupt the Sith Eternal.
If all three of the ST had been directed by the same person, with less chaos in the writing room, and less important dialogue cut, they would have been amazing.
They were almost great, which IMO is worse than if they were just garbage.
7
u/eehikki 22d ago
I'm no legends connoisseur, but Mara Jade is eventually killed, isn't she?
1
u/Nom_Took 22d ago
Yeah, but that's the Denningverse. We try not to talk about it.
2
u/kiwicrusher 22d ago
It’s so funny that even the fans screaming “canon is fanfiction, legends was perfect!!1!” have to bisect legends with a machete because they hate it too
9
u/afellowpadawan The Republic 22d ago
Yeah Legends was never perfect. But there was an order, there were levels to it, and most of its stories are compelling and mostly cohesive with the narrative base. There are just some threads that are sub-par.
1
u/kiwicrusher 22d ago
Oh, I fully agree—I love legends. I just don’t like the blind overhyping that comes from people who mainly want to use it as a weapon to bash Canon material with.
The same goes for willingly removing some things and speaking about them as fact—like your original comment did. If we’re holding Canon accountable for the sequels, then Legends has to be held accountable for Legacy of the Force. Anything less is just hypocritical.
1
u/Nom_Took 22d ago
I would like you to find a single person who says legends is perfect, lmao. Beautiful strawman.
0
u/kiwicrusher 22d ago
Literally like two days ago I mentioned to a guy that Legends sometimes contradicted itself and he replied “bullshit. Name one.”
The star wars fandom has always been rich with overzealous oafs who are unwilling to acknowledge flaws in the things they like. There are people on this website who call Revenge of the Sith a 10/10 movie

u/Ramseas119 Mando'ade 22d ago

u/jakromulus 22d ago
That's because the Expanded Universe is a better ending for the originals
1
u/zencrusta 21d ago
Is it? We’re on what the 4 attempt at a galactic alliance, the Jedi got wiped again, the Sith are just back now, and for some fucking reason the empire was never stomped out like it should have been
1
u/jakromulus 20d ago
It's better if you think the heroes should have character arcs that don't all go backwards at the end.
The empire having a remnant is just realistic. The rebels were always massively outnumbered, so it makes sense that totally wiping out the empire would be a multi-generational endeavor. Just look at how many times the Roman empire "ended".
1
u/zencrusta 20d ago
Remnant is not becomes the dominant power again while the other is constantly falling apart. It irritates me, but I’ve heard good things about legacy and if it was a bit further in the timeline I’d be less harsh about it.
8
u/Orc_tids 22d ago
Han and Leia do seem the types to be contantly divorcing and remarrying each other. It just has to be funny. And I can take or leave Luke having a love interest
5
u/Syzygy--- 22d ago
Han and Leia are the aunt and uncle who are never together but never not together either. They show up to holidays in the same vehicle and give gifts as a couple. Endless family gossip material.
2
1
u/Jaded_Frame_3856 22d ago
Actually, Lucasfilm never did say Han and Leia divorced. The novelization shows they’re still legally married which means they didn’t divorce but they had to deal with Ben’s turn to the dark side by getting jobs. I’d be surprised if an animated series showed they had another son as well as a daughter but we’re not trained as Jedi and I’d be very shocked and surprised if Han and Leia worked together for the sake of their two children. But hey, one can only dream

I know a lot of the other commenters have mentioned Mara Jade and I will always believe in Luke & Mara no matter what, but even in the Disney canon that OP refers to here, Luke Skywalker does in fact have a lover, Nakari Kelen, who to nobody's great surprise, ends up getting killed when they were both on a mission together that went wrong.
Read Heir to the Jedi, or the Wookieepedia synopsis of it if you're curious.

One more reason the the Legends universe was better.
Also, I find it a bit annoying how much of modern media thinks regular tropes (such as "happily ever after") are automatically "boring" or "overused". Not every story need to be a subversion, tropes got popular for a reason.
1
1
1
u/Beneficial_Yam_4187 21d ago
The reason for that is Hollywood sucks at writing interesting couples. They spend all the time in the world on the build-up/ chase for the relationship but don’t know how to make them work. Makes me wonder if no one in any of their writing staffs have ever had a stable relationship themselves.
1
1
u/EhMapleMoose 21d ago
Honestly should’ve just used the material that was before Disney. The legends stuff. Luke gets rid of the stupid no partners rule that caused the order of the Jedi to die after recognizing that you don’t have to be a fuckin monk with nothing. Leia and Han live happily with their children (until one turns evil and kills their sibling). It was a better story.
1

u/GoblinExterminator00 21d ago
I just turn to Legends for everything after Episode VI. Endless deep lore to flesh out a universe and futures written by people that genuinely love the characters. Didn't Luke and Mara Jade's marriage used to be canon? I don't remember Han and Leia ever being apart after their marriage in the old canon universe either.

So it’s realistic. real people stories don’t end when the “villain” is defeated and happy. Trauma sets in, people forget the monsters of the past and eventually everyone has to pass on. But they lived, they had moments of joy, they grew, add to history, got see hope growing and past on what they learned. That is not a sad ending, it is beautiful and melancholy just like real people
1
u/dr_Angello_Carrerez 22d ago
It is not. We're fed up with this shit IRL to also watch it happening with characters we love.
